Just wrapped up this guy. Kind of a deco take on a mid-size small jumbo-ish thing. Turned out a bit more deco looking than I had initially thought it would but I'm not upset about it at all.

The pearl inlay is one I cut from a nuclei. The braz for the fingerboard was exceptionally old (100+) and at some point in it's life it had had several holes drilled through it in that area. I patched the holes with other braz scraps that matched and then inlaid the pearl to give it a little bling but also to help hide the repairs. Turned out looking really cool and I'm happy with it. It's on the 10th fret though so that might through some for a loop.

The neck heel looks a bit lumpy, maybe it's just the angle the picture was taken.
I've been roughing the transition from shaft to heel with a 50mm forstner bit since someone suggested it here, and like it.
Saves time too.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Body is a bit lumpy too. An outside form would help that.

I do yes. First day I strung it up it was a little stringy sounding but after 3 days now it's gotten super dark and woody.

I like it. The rosette came out very nice--I like the simple Gibson style 1x6 bridge too. Congrats!

14th. I bent the sides to taper a bit towards to the back, so the join at the top is about the 14.25 point, if you hold a straightedge at the base of the heel pointing up towards the fingerboard it joins right at the 14th. It's just an effort on my part to try some different ways to create access to the upper fretboard without a sharp or hard cutaway. With the join being a little forward like that it gives just a hair extra access on the upper frets.

Yup, just legit don't have the space for a mold right now. I decided to do the Bruce Sexauer thing and just learn to build without one. Takes alot more time bending to get the sides to hold their shape but I'm getting it with practice. It's just chasing symetry that's the challenge.



It's flat alot like what Dion does. Might just be the angle of the pic. If I had the ability to use a forstner in a drill press or mill I'd totally do it. Just have to make do with only hand tools for the time being with the space I've got.

It looks like you have a good handle on binding and purfling. Aside from the rosette, it seems to have that classic flattop vibe. I like the color of the rosewood (EIR?) and satin finish on the sides.

Very nice. I, too, am from the "less is more" crowd. I like it. A lot.

I like the simple aesthetic. I’m an aspiring builder, so it’s nice to see other relative beginners making cool stuff. I hope my number 3 is this nice.

thank you. And yes that's east indian stuff. I realized I neglected to get a picture of the back but this set has some black/dark red tones to it that are pretty cool.
