Hello,

A couple weeks back I accidentally knocked over a sheet of plywood in the shop. The plywood knocked this plate off the bench and, ala Rube Goldberg, a large bottle of titebond rolled off the bench onto it, snapping it in half.

It closes up nicely but I’m not sure how to clamp it. Maybe just the tape method? Any other suggestions? I tried to fit it into an LMI plate joining jig but it doesn’t line up well because it’s already trimmed to 00 shape.

Tape it. If I need extra clamping pressure, I use long strips of tape, stretching it over the edges.

My two cents. If you decide to wrap extra tape, rope, clamp, etc. then support the pieces with some cross boards so they do not buckle. You might also want to consider interior reinforcement across the repair, though if the glue joint is perfect, that might be superfluous. I am not sure if even the tape is useful, because with the kind of joining where you need each little irregularity to fit, the tape might interfere. Maybe just glue and leave it on the table. When I do that, I cover the exposed side of the joint with wax paper, so there is no differential drying to buckle the wood.

I do not know if your wood would stain from CA. I have glued BRW top and back by laying them on the table on wax paper, fitting the pieces tightly, then flooding repeatedly with thin CA several hours apart. From tests, I found that a single flooding was all soaked up and did not glue the joint.

Tape seemed to work well, I got squeeze out all along the joint. I clamped it up between two pieces of plywood. I even got to use my Jesus take the wheel clamps. I haven’t used those in a while.

That's a bad omen when glue breaks it!
I'd throw that glue away.

By the way, what species of wood?

Black walnut from Ohio. I got two sets of it from American Tonewood. The sets were so thick I had half a mind to resaw the two into four.

Appreciate the help. It’s nearly invisible with the exception of a small area where a splinter was lost. I tried to find it when it happened, but no dice.

Make a splinter from scrap. Doesn't matter if it is high--that can be leveled easily.

Great fix! I just saw the thread, but I was thinking tape, too. I’m glad it did the trick!
