I remember when "Made in Japan" was a sign of poor quality but then they turned it around big time in the late 60's.

It was an American named Edwards Deming that changed all that. An engineer and a statistician that came up with a system of quality control that is still used today. Americans thought it was too much to deal with but the Japanese adopted it and by the 1970's when American cars might only last 80k miles because all the parts in them were sloppy fitted the Japanese would not accept anything less than perfect and people started buying the better quality cars.

Nice Tele, Hesh. Another thing I check on "factory fresh" guitars is the tuning machines. Many times they are finger tight or even looser...

Decades ago when my shop was in a large local store, I would let new stuff sit for a week to acclimate to the local humidity and barometric pressure before doing setups. I could spend an afternoon going through them, and soon they'd be jumping off the wall or the ranks of guitar stands. I didn't charge much for the initial setup.

The store owner KNEW his sales were better because I was there. He offered any buyer a free setup with every purchase, too - and I charged the store for the service.

Another local store kept bugging me to do setups on new stuff up until recently. I got tired of doing uke setups, so I offered to train his staff on setups and suggested some tools to buy for the job. He popped for 2 sets of tools, and I spent a couple afternoons giving lessons as I'd train a couple employees . I'd do the first one, and in a couple hours they'd all done at least one and gotten a new skill. It was worth it to me to teach some new bloods and it freed me up to do work I that gave me more satisfaction.

Very cool Steve. We have been asked to train a major national reseller's staff in set-ups and may do it but since I used to license enterprise software to corporations I have some history with this thing known as "train the trainer." Or in other words when we train someone else and empower them to do it themselves including training others with our IP (intellectual property) in the software game the price was five times what a single iteration had we done it ourselves would cost. So If I travel to another state to do this "the price is X" with X being five times a single, retail setup plus expenses. That may be too cheap too, don't know.

Anyway this tele was offered not to be critical of the resellers but to show what to expect when we purchase a so-called... set-up instrument, it's often not or the set-up sucks.

If I could target one area that 95% of the set-ups I see from others are lacking and is poorly done it's the but slots. Oh well.
