The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Clever.

Very cool. It just needs a suicide knob so you can just keep going around.

For them what knows what a 'suicide knob' is. I don't think that's common knowledge anymore (but I date myself).

In the olden days just out of high school I used to drive a forklift at the airport loading planes. That was my intro to the suicide knob.

Everything on the farm I worked as a kid had a suicide knob! Power steering was not standard equipment on the old Willys jeep or the John Deere 4020 and dang sure not on the international harvester. The jeep was good fun in the mud with the knob

Old Jeep’s were fun with the knob until you hit a big rut then they could spin around and whack the crap outa you

For those working on a production basis, that might be a good design to motorize. By leaving the last 2 inches of the rim of the dish bare of sandpaper, and lining the supports with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene plastic you could turn the dish on and let it run. When it sanded the rim down to the level of the supports it would stop sanding. You could even add a kill switch to turn it off when it reached that point if you wanted to.

One of my Dad's old pickups had a suicide knob on the steering wheel. It was the kind of truck and the kind of man, that after he sprayed the truck with some industrial grade blue paint out in the back yard, he sprayed his straw cowboy hat to match. The truck also had a set of musical horns a previous owner had installed. Fond memories!

I always heard those knobs referred to as necking knobs.

That is clever, although I usually incorporate more back and forth or sloshing motion which seems faster.

For high speed the bowling ball balancer dish mod is what I was using. It's fast - too fast! It could remove an inch of rim in less than 5 minutes. The Bosch mixer mod is more sedate and easier to control.
