Harry I think that an 8" is too small. I have a 9" (and a 14") and my 9" is too small for neck blanks IMO. Can it be done? Sure with some struggle but you are pushing the tool and that can be unsafe.

I have a 10"/350 watts (0.47 HP) which handles necks blanks well - even Wenge, Padauk (cut from 6"x3"), Mahogany etc. no problem.
Also used it to resaw sides.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I have a 10" Craftsman/Rikon and it handles neck blanks just fine.
I just cut a 1 1/2" Ash body blank for an electric, no problems....

I did it with a Delta 9". I think it was 1/3hp. It worked, but the cuts needed much clean up.

We have brand for 9" here just the same max cutting depth 80mm with 8" brand, maybe I must go to 10" or 12"
thanks Hesh :)
