Colin,

I love the shape of that guitar!

I've used Osmo, for an entire guitar; and like it; but what is glue boost? Is is like some sort of CA mix? I can't tell from the website. I've used CA on fingerboards/fretboards, and it works well; but stinks!

The belly does look nice.

Thanks, but as always, the maker knows all the flaws!
GluBoost Fill n' Finish is a CA product- https://www.gluboost.com/store/
As the name implies, used mainly for repairing finishes, dings, scratches, etc. Self leveling, and slow-ish to harden so can be spread (foam brush, paper towels, spreader, w.h.y.)
The GluDry Accelerator is non whitening/bubbling, instantly (well, very quickly) sets the GluBoost Fill n' Finish.
Both top quality products.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well technically not MY shop, but I've been drafted for the weekend to try to meet some schedule commitments for bands (finally!!!) going out on tour. I'll be replicating this MIM P-Bass microtonal conversion (done earlier this week) on a rosewood board, but otherwise just the usual: place ten extra frets, move five face markers and five side markers, then level/crown/polish/setup. Shades of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards (third-best band name, ever)!

Mr. Stock sent a spreadsheet over yesterday with the calculations, but I also found a tool online that allows a luthier to enter the number of divisions in the calculation window to be used within each octave (24 produces 1/2 semitone spacing). Supposed to be a 5-6 hour job on a maple fretboard, but I hope a little less on rosewood.

https://www.ekips.org/tools/guitar/fretfind2d/

Finally: for those of you that are thinking "...just go fretless or learn to bend!", Google Steve Vai on microtonal preferences as well as pull out Kid A by Radiohead and spin 'How to Disappear...' unique sound. Vai believes microtonal fret spacing forces the player out of the muscle-memory-driven repetitive patterns, so is worth the cost and effort.

Starting the largest batch of guitars I've ever made in a single go. 4 commissions, 2 dealer builds, 1 experiment (first attempt at a flamenco), an entry into a guitar making competition, and one more just for fun.

From left to right: Ceylon satinwood, padauk (with ziricote wedge), Madagascan rosewood (Dalbergia Greveana), African blackwood (the densest rosewood-Dalbergia melanonoxylon), Brazilian tulipwood (a rare rosewood-Dalbergia decepularis), figured Mediterranean cypress, Madagascar rosewood (Dalbergia Baronii), and Brazilian rosewood

That's a lot of color! Cool.
Nice use of narrower stock. Well done.
Well not nearly done yet.

It’s an Adamas… one of the ones with the cf top. Top is entirely loose from one side of the fb tongue all the way round to the other side of the tongue… total glue failure. The glue between top and fb tongue hasn’t failed and it’s the only thing stopping the soundboard from falling off entirely. I’ll pull the neck bolts tomorrow and see if the neck comes off with the soundboard all in one piece …

I have the slow-cure boat epoxy standing by…

Ziribari spent some quality time with the buffer today. It might be placebo, but it seems the Cardinal polyurethane buffed out easier than the Simtec polyester.

Getting to know my little $200 cnc machine.
I ran it four hours today using a 0.8mm pcb router bit without the bit breaking.
Slooooow and steady is the key.
I ordered some shell from the Duke today. Shipping was only $9.00.

Nice! The trick with tiny bits is to avoid full width slotting. First cut out as much as possible with a larger bit, and then use vertical motion to nibble your way into the tight areas with the small one. Position so you have less than half the diameter over the part (center of the bit is over open space), and then move downward to full depth, raise Z, step over, repeat. Then you can do the finish pass without ever having to put a heavy side load on the bit. Mostly necessary for hard materials like steel and titanium, but should increase bit life in softer materials too, plus is faster.

I'm wrapping up a few builds and some repairs, so the shop is loaded with beautiful objects! Here's a 360 view of my downstairs space.

I’m about to send this one down the road.

It’s Sitka over Honduran mahogany - 00.12.25”. The finish was influenced by Jeff Jewitt’s burst video which is available on Robbie O’Brien’s website. Overall I’m pretty pleased with the finish , though I’m never completely satisfied.

Best, M
