I've cut ribs off stock for guitars and violins. I've sliced wedges for violins and cellos. The cello was an ordeal. Monday I took some wood in for resawing, and they wouldn't go to 3/16 or so; they like 1/4" They can plane and thickness sand too, and they sell wood; so I guess that's the reason.

I had a piece of quilted Birdseye that is JUST big enough for a Panormo, but after resawing it is too thin for the viola back I was going to use it for. So I decided to saw it myself. 12 inch wide with a ryoba saw just shy of 12 inches.

I must have got tired when I got near the bottom, and I was angling it too much, but I got through. An hour and a half of planing, (after 2 hours of sawing!) and I see the rainbow at the end. The one will easily end up at the 1/8" or so the plan calls for. The other will have one spot a little lower. I'll just make the other side a little thicker, and work with that. I was going for a little over 3/16" The top half was.

It isn't ideal, but it can be done. A 7.5 - 8" back in halves would be easier; that is what the cello was; but it is 33" long! My 10" bandsaw struggles with ribs.









Yes. I am taking a break now. At least the basement is still only 69 degrees and 45% humidity.

How's your hand and wrist doing?

I don't have any problems with.them. My elbow can get sore sometimes just holding a phone. Working doesn't bother it. I work fast, so a break is nice.

A small bench plane with grooves in the iron works good for roughing figured stock.

I got a little BCTW plane Monday.for my birthday. It will put a nice shine on them. It cut nice right out of the box. Yes it comes in a fancy cardboard box. I'll take the one that they cut the other day back to them one day to thickness. I don't want to plane off that much stock!

I'm not crazy.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

When I don't feel like setting up the bandsaw I will resaw wood by hand - but I cheat! I deeply kerf both edges on the tablesaw to remove most of the wood using a 10" thin kerf blade. The kerfs also act as a saw guide and help keep things on track. For an 8 inch back, 3 inch deep kerfs on both edges only leave 2 inches to be removed. You might break a sweat, but hopefully avoid the "big one"

Whatever gets the pig clean. I remember Padma would resaw tops like that. Not a big deal if you hit it ten minutes at a time here and there.

Or you could get a bigger saw.
