Took almost a year (we bought a house and then it flooded so that delayed things quite a bit)

This is my smallest to date with a 15.5 lower bout and a tighter almost L00 style waist and a narrower upper bout. Short scale at 24.56 and a big beefy 1940s inspired neck profile. Tapered headstock with my first dovetail joint neck as well. Shellac finish. Reverse taper and a deep body at 4.5 at it's deepest. Adirondack for the top from Allied Luthierie and rosewood for the back and sides.

Lots of firsts for me but I'm happy with her. Pretty deep woody and raw tone which I really like for fingerstyle. Hates being downtuned hough haha!

She's a bit asymmetrical but I'm working on getting things better symmetried (if that's a word) with each build.

Nice, bet it sounds good. I don't worry about asymmetry too much, it's just the sign of a hand built guitar. I bend mine on a pipe and they're all a bit asymmetrical. I've never had anyone seem to notice though ;)

I don't see the asymmetry and my guess is most won't. We are often times our worst critics ;)

What is your building method? Do you use a mold?

Nice job.

Thanks Mike

It sounds super raw woody and deep. So to me and everyone that's played it thus far it sounds great so that's a victory I guess.

Thanks. And yes when you build it and you know every little mistake it's hard to not focus on the little things that you messed up lol

I just bend on an old Ibex pipe bender and I don't use a mold.

Dan, I don't know that you can say as the builder you notice every mistake. I've had people tell me all sorts of things that were wrong that I never noticed. One guy asked if I planned for the bottom of the f holes to be further from one side than the other. I looked at it. Really? I measured, and the were. It looked fine to me. I didn't lay them out from the edge, and wasn't even looking for that. I still don't notice it. I don't even remember which one it was! They are all off.

All old violins are not symmetrical. The ones that are close, stand out as being weirdly perfect.

I do too use a pipe and what I have found make for perfect symmetry every time is the Spanish method of tentelones (blocks) glued in one by one. Bend as close to perfect as you can, it has to be reasonably close especially in the waist, then fit the side to the outline on the top on your workboard, clamp it in place and then glue in the blocks.

Looks great. Nice work! Don't worry about any asymmetry. As long as it fits in the case you are good to go. You have to be really out of whack for someone to actually notice.
