I'm more worried about letting the world know after I measure the one at work tomorrow that my pecker is on .007" thick....

Yes it is designed to be used if we want with strings on and the string lifted out of the slot and set to one side. I don't use it that way but we can show a client in real time that his sitar sound is a precision measured low nut slot.

And yes again the tool changes values since we are measuring near nothing the measurement is so fine when you rock it but it's lowest value is always then it is straight up or down.

Making one that dos not have the narrower base to fit between strings would reduce or eliminate rocking but as someone who uses the tool for every Floyd Rose I have to set-up (I hate them....) which is several times a week (sadly) (we charge more for them too because Hesh hates them...) the rocking is never an issue for me.

What is worse in my experience is when setting intonation and watching the swings from how much fretting pressure I apply with my finger. I can change the reading far more cents than the threshold of human hearing. As such both my right hand and my fretting hand are simulating the average player with a moderate attack unless I know more about them. I used to ask them to play for me but now I am not there when the germ infested covid carriers come in during the day. 91 year old blind Mom we are tying to keep alive here ya know.

It is not easy to set-up an instrument well for a generic player you have to set a bit higher knowing they may be a heavy hitter.

As with any tool, it's what you do with it that matters.

I feel that I must.

I use the SM nut slotting gauge which, as I’m sure you know, shows the string height over the first to give a reference number of how low the slot is. What I like about this approach is doing it without being strung up.
