Michael. I can't even get super smooth like that on flat! On curves is a a LOT of trouble. I need to do better filling. Very nice, modern look. I do like the look of a non-cutaway.

Kind of an odd project but I think it’s really nice…
My partner got a Martin HD – 28 guitar body with no neck that apparently fell off the wall the Martin factory and Got damaged. part of the side and the head block were broken but it went back together beautifully you can’t even tell.
So it’s got my partner Chavez of 812 Guitars signature headstock on it and I made the Maple neck
if you’re familiar with the Bigsby that Martin made it’s sort of like that.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Some great looking stuff. That archtop is nice! Did you hand carve the plates or create a wood chip tsunami with routers and die grinders

Things are hoppin at my place, two OM commissions, numbers 88 and 89 going on and one due back from finish soon. I hope to hit 100 before my 77 year old body gives up. We’ll see.

In the middle of some light cosmetic surgery on this old Stella. I believe it just turned 100. Color is not my strong suit so this stuff is always a process for me - a bit of color, put it away for a day, look again, decide I’m not quite there, tweak things a bit etc

We’ve talked before about how we hide things from ourselves in the shop. Oftentimes we discover them when we are placing the newly made version of the same thing into the most logical spot in all the land.

I’ve shared before that I use an HDPE strip as a binding proxy for when I’m installing purfling. I do it all with CA. Example:



When I started on the job above I looked everywhere for my strips of HDPE. I mean everywhere, for like 45 minutes. I resigned to cutting new ones. After the job was completed I wrapped them in tape, labeled them, and went to place them in the most logical spot in all the land.



Even wrapped with the same green tape and labeled!!

And then the same day, I looked for quite a while for the end strip I had already cut to size.




I even said to myself - “I’m sure I would have taped it up somewhere out of the way to avoid accidentally throwing it out “

I blame the blindness from wearing the optivisor.

If you ever lose the optivisor, be sure to check the top of your head.

I've done this over and over. I swear, those special truss rod Allen wrenches walk off on their own, then laugh at me from under some cabinet.

Major surgery on a Mossman Tennessee Flat Top.

It had the “Agony of de Feet” top failure, neck was caving into the body, back braces were all loose, there were several goobered up prior repair attempts.
It’s mine, and a basket case-ish project.
Upon opening, top was signed in ‘72

And the tailblock is stamped as a 72

But the paper label says ‘75


I’ve posted the discrepancy to the Mossman group on FB. There are some former employees as well as fans there. There are several theories - label is straight up bogus (compared to other samples, handwriting isn’t a good match and the paper is pretty new); it may have come back to the shop for some reason; after the Conn lawsuit, some unfinished guitars were completed from parts; who knows!

Neither of the serial numbers is on the Mossman serial number registry website either.

Anyhow, deep dive into a cool old guitar. Planning to get it up and running before returning to any of my builds-in-progress

Almost done with this one. Royal Lac French polished on curly walnut.

Losing stuff. I know the feeling. Fitting a cello neck, a 1/4 X 1/2" triangle of rib at the end popped off when I tapped the neck loose after tapping it down when fitting. I FOUND it on the floor. COOL. I put it all by itself on a bench I wasn't using. 2 days later, I went to glue it on after it was all set; and it was gone!

Finishing an Explorer build.
Just need an afternoon to make the nut and setup.
Mahogany, Maple, Cebil. EMG-81 active pickup.
This is the last inlay I cut by hand. I’m using CNC now.

Chuck - good job on the Mossman. Such a storied company whose founder and instruments didn't fare well over the years. I only met Stuart one time back in the 70's at Walnut Valley Festival. We might still be blessed with his presence if he'd just bothered to wear a respirator while shooting finishes.

Just finished making a body mold for a new body shape drawn up using G Thang. The lower bout is 14.5".

The first thing I'm going to use it for is to build a 5-course mandocello. Or a 5-course long-scale octave mandolin, depending on how you look at it.

Brad - That's an interesting method for making that binding joint. Thanks for posting it. I haven't seen it before. I like the simple design of the guide block. I'm assuming that saw gives a sharp crisp edge on the end of the binding. Is it a special saw in some way? The razor saw I have doesn't leave a sharp enough edge to get a really tight joint which is why I use a chisel.

That’s Terry Kennedy’s patented design!

I use a zona saw, seems to work fine on wood bindings. Full disclosure, I use the method below on plastic. I found a saw on plastic didn’t work well, at least for me. Just take the ruler out of a cheap combination square and slide the binding in. I usually use a small wedge of wood to hold it in place while I make the cut.
