Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). Save money. Pee in your truck DEF tank. Its just urea. Same with hide glue. Pee in it to extend open time. You can thank me later.

One of the best scenes ever in The Office: Michael and Dwight are staying in a hotel room. They shine a black light on the bedspread, which shows splotches all over. Michael asks what the splotches are. Dwight says they are either blood, semen or urine. Michael says: “Oh, God, I hope it’s urine!”

For hide glue, I prefer the more clinical approach of adding little white BBs to the mix. But maybe that’s just me. :D

Story of Petey, the Snake

This is the story about a poor little snake named "Petey."

Petey was a snake only so big. Petey lived in a pit with
his mother. One day Petey was hissing in the pit when his mother
said: 'Petey, don't hiss in the pit, go outside the pit to hiss."
So Petey went outside of the pit to hiss.

Petey was hissing all around when he finally leaned over and
hissed in the pit. Petey's mother heard Petey hissing in the pit
and said: "Petey, if you must hiss in a pit, go over to Mrs.
Pott's pit to hiss in her pit. Petey went over to Mrs. Pott's
pit to hiss in her pit, but Mrs. Pott was not at home, so he
hissed in her pit anyway. While Petey was hissing in Mrs. Pott's
pit, Mrs. Pott came home and found Petey hissing in her pit. She
said: "Petey, if you must hiss in a pit, don't hiss in my pit; go
to your own pit and hiss."

This made Petey very sad, and he cried all the way home.
When Petey got home, his mother saw him crying, and said: "Petey,
what's the matter?" Petey said: "I went over to Mrs. Pott's to
hiss in her pit, but Mrs. Pott was not at home, so I hissed in
her pit anyway, Mrs. Pott came home and found me hissing in her
pit and said: 'Petey, if you must hiss in a pit, go to your own
pit and hiss. Don't hiss in my pit.'"

This made Petey's mother very angry, and she said: "Why that
mean old lady. I knew Mrs. Pott when she didn't have a pit to
hiss in."

I never tried the urea trick. I suppose I should get some and try it. Can you give me a brand or a link to what you use?

If you really want to do "controversial" just piss in the glue pot - supposedly urine contains about the right percentage of urea to adulterate hide glue to extend the "open" time. I will add - I've never used urea in my glue and have no practical experience with this. laughing6-hehe

If you don't learn the repair side of Lutherie you are not a Luthier and are instead simply putting model airplane kits together and your guitars are "GLOs" guitar like objects......

Left-handed electric and acoustic-electric guitars sound better through left-handed amps.

Agreed, it is machining! ...which is more difficult than woodworking. You can hog off wood a lot faster than metal, but the programming and workholding and tool changing times are no different.

Real Loothiers bend their ribs on the chimney of their shop wood burner.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Controversy:

A simple bolted butt joint, neck to body, is just as good as a complicated material consuming pocket joint, either bolted or glued.

I've been watching a luthier, Gabriel something on YT. This all she does, simple bolt on butt joint. It works for the banjo and nobody has ever thought to dovetail it into the rim. I'm heading down this path in the future. My current build uses a tenon, the next will be a butt joint. I'm never satisfied with the action on my instruments and always want to tinker with it so, no more dovetails with the exception of mandolins if I ever finish #4.

Except it needs a chunky heel that gets in the way of your thumb on the back of the neck when playing high frets, especially with a cutaway. Electric style perpendicular bolt-on is best in that regard, because it eliminates the heel entirely. Although I don't like the look of it.

You can do a semi - butt joint bolt on that doesn't have a "chunky" heel to get in the way, and allows you to easily adjust the action. You just fit it into a shallow mortise like a violin neck.
