I recently acquired a Delta 12.5” planer. I don’t know how I’ve worked so long without one, total game changer for dressing billets. I was just marveling at how much faster the work went rather than with a drum sander when it started making a vibrating noise and then poof, a puff of smoke and it stopped working.

I took it apart and found that the bolt holding the pulley on the blade assembly had loosened and allowed the pulley to damage itself on the drive shaft and the belt had come off. I think I can get away with a bit more work with the existing pulley while trying to find a new one, but the belt…

Do belts shrink? The belt is so short there’s absolutely no way of getting it back on the pulleys, it doesn’t even come close.

So I guess the main question is, can drive belts shrink?

I've had the same planer for probably 15-20 years now and have not touched it ever except to change blades of course. Hmmmm, maybe I should have a look at it

My guess is there is some sort of belt adjustment? Sort of like the alternator on your car maybe? I would not think belts like that would shrink. If anything I could see them expanding.

Perhaps, the wrong belt for this machine....since the bolt backed off and you recently acquired it.

That belt looks toasted anyway. When you order a replacement, maybe it will be the right size?

I was curious to see how the planer worked mechanically and came across a pretty good video. Brad beat me to the submit button, same video.

I think the guy should have replaced the pulley too and the wobble was most likely do to the inside bore of the pulley being worn when it was loose.

From the comments it looks like the pulley nut gets loose with some regularity.

A drop of removable lock-tite might be worthwhile on the nut threads.

Looks like the belt stretches a fair amount in assembly.

Looks to me like your belt is shorter than that one in vid. At 19 min. shows putting belt back on.
If that doesn't work for you look up the proper belt size for your model... at least you'll know if you have the right one.
+1 on the lock tite.

Oh and to answer your main question:), nope, I've never seen a belt shrink...stretch, yes.
One other thing, if you have the correct belt, you could put it in boiling hot water for a few minutes
before attempting to put it on.

Thanks for the vid! Unfortunately, the pulley is cracked, and new pulleys are no longer available. However when reassembled, with the nut tightened, the assembly feels solid.

The belt is the one that came of the machine. So I guess it must be able to go back on somehow. I’ll get a new one and have a go…

Grainger has micro-ribbed v-belts. Might find something there.

Is that some sort of belt tensioner behind the lower pulley?

Reading the reviews might answer some of your questions, especially about "shrinkage" (Caused by being too hot rather than too cold. Ha!):
