SPAM is a side effect of opening the forum and not requiring me to approve accounts.
To make cleaning it up easier please don't post in the spam thread.
Each post requires me to individually delete them, so if there are 10 comments to a SPAM thread, that is 11 posts that I need to delete.

Just tag it as spam and ill do the house keeping

If you want to re-enable account auth and delegate I’m sure we can get some folks willing to approve accounts, manage permissions, etc…

As long as everyone ignores the posts and the spammers don't get carried away, Lance's solution might be better. So far they have only been a minor nuisance.

Appointing some mods that have limited privileges would work too. The spam isn't (currently) that bad, so it doesn't really matter to me!

The real problem IMO is not the new threads created but the replies in existing threads. Take a look at David’s thread on bridge pin taper. It’s unreasonable for Lance to have to read every thread and remove unwanted replies.

Everyone on the forum ignored it and skipped over it as Lance suggested. As long as we do that it won't cause real problems (as long as spammers don't get carried away).

I'd be up for a Mod with limited privileges as well. Anyone who utilizes slotted pins will get a demerit lol

the exclamation symbol is a report the post button and I'm thinking this is what Lance is wanting us to do...

Lance why not Appoint some moderators? I know this forum is free except for the classifieds but it would really serve the members to have more moderation or someone they can send emails to. Ive sent you a bunch of emails and haven't heard back in over a year.

Moderation can go astray, as can editing. I've revisited the archives on the MIMF and found posts I made that were so heavily edited that they completely changed the meaning of what I said. People who want to be moderators often feel the need to use their power to shape the message as they see fit. I think this forum has got along just fine without moderators and having the forum owner decide what is and isn't appropriate.

I respectfully disagree. I think there have been times when moderators were sorely needed. I agree that moderators should not have their thumbs on the scale, but the actual problems caused by not having moderators are, to me, worse than the potential problem of over zealous moderators.

Were you around when the forum had moderators?

FYI, the problem with spam posts is not just that you might feed the beast. Most spam post include unreadable code that at best attempts to trick search engines and at worst introduce code to read or disrupt the database.

Blocking new accounts that don’t go through SOME verification is essential. My password for this forum was scraped from this site a few years ago. How do I know? A password unique to this forum was sent to me in one of those stupid “I have your password” scam emails.

There isn’t a lot of critical data on this database, but some of you have your real name, location, and email saved here.

To be clear, I was not suggesting moderators. I was suggesting delegating administrative functions. Account authorization, classified approval, password reset help, etc… and along with that removing posts which are clearly spam. If account auth is turned on there won’t be a lot of spam anyway. This would indeed enable privileges for editing posts but that was not my intent.

I agree that any post from a human that is to be deleted / edited would need to come from Lance. Some of the other mechanics of the site though could use some help.

FWIW, also know that I’m not volunteering, I’m suggesting it’s needed.

According to the profile info under my name on the left, I joined the OLF in December of 2013. So, if you are referring to events before that, then I wasn’t. If you had moderators who didn’t do a good job, that’s unfortunate, but I stand by what I said. I think the forum would be better off if it had reasonable moderators.

And as Brad has said, the admin stuff is different.

How do you tag a post as spam?

Seems like a lot of recent spammers coming here. I am starting to get annoyed.

Been doing as Lance has asked flagging SPAM and not posting in the thread. Works great, thanks Lance.

The OLF only ever had one moderator and it was me. It was a thankless job with nothing to do. When I thought I might show up I would consult Lance to be sure and he always told me to stand down with one exception that I won't go into here. I resigned after about a year as the moderator mindset without the willingness of the senior management to have moderation was a non starter and didn't serve anyone well. Most never knew this even happened or that there was a moderator at one time for about a year.

Be careful what you wish for we do not need a MINO...... moderator in name only

Lance has his own formula for the OLF which I believe has some emphasis on the stated idea in the forum rules that we are all responsible for what we post, our own words and such. It's my belief that this is perceived to be or in fact is a legal position and integral to how the OLF was rolled out and has functioned largely very well for nearly 20 years. Not interested in debating any of this I am simply stating what I think is and has been happening here all along.

Bottom line folks this is Lance's sandbox and if he wanted to have moderators he would have gone there beyond my short stint as the moderator here.

Meanwhile, I'll keep hoping spammers drop dead in the street before they get here.
