Hey folks,

Putting feelers out on this.

For me it’s sometimes hard to incorporate new build techniques and experiment if it’s disruptive to what you’re already doing.

I wonder if we can learn together. What do you think about doing a build challenge / book club combination where we can all learn some material properties measurements together?

I was thinking we could hold a zoom meeting, cadence TBD, and work through the material in the Nicoletti book together. What I had in mind is we all start a build at the same time and work through the material putting it into practice, and sharing results. Trying our best to stay synchronized. At the end we can compare builds just like any build challenge in the past, start a forum thread, etc… capture and share all the output.

Thoughts?

I’m on board, except for the build. I have too many things that draw me away from building. But I should be able to keep up with a reading assignment. I just ordered a copy of the book earlier today, so well timed.

I have been thinking of getting that book. It sounds like you think it's worth having. I may be interested, but I need to get the book and see what's involved and then it would depend on the timing.

I haven’t received it yet. Maybe someone who has it already can chime in. What I think based on other reviews and comments is it’s a practical (simplified?) approach to implementing the GG method.

That’s why I thought it might be a good book to collaborate together on and build an instrument dedicated to putting it into practice. Sort of parallel to our normal work so it’s not disruptive to anything. Maybe take a year to do it or something. Just ideas.

Giuliano appears fairly regularly on the Looth Group portal with live workshops, talking with other builders. I have the book and the suggested equipment. I have done some rudimentary testing while building a series of six guitars in order to try and make the tonal profile of the six as consistent as possible.

I would be interested in working in a group over time to better understand the testing methods described in his book. I don't think it would be difficult to engage Giuliano with questions should there be any. He seems very motivated to help people build better guitars.

I got Giuliano's book when SM starting selling it. It's a GREAT read, explaining and focusing of the main modes of the top, while describing the most important modes of an active back. It has distilled the building methods in TG's book concerning stiff sides and coupling of modes Giuliano's methods of measuring "stiffness" are described in a way that makes them easy to duplicate/ replicate the test bed. It's a highly distilled fraction of the material in TG's book and has helped me better understand it too.

I have the equipment and SW needed to characterize fundamental frequencies but have not really started down the path. I would be interested in the book club discussions, but need more time to become a competent builder before participating in a build..

Yes. I can’t remember without flipping through it again if it goes beyond voicing the guitar in scope, but I remember it being very similar to Trevor’s book in that regard, and pretty approachable. He actually references and credits Trevor’s book. There are a lot of downloadable resources, too.

I’m in the same boat as Don with building time right now (three cheers for an unexpected bathroom renovation), but I’d love to be part of any discussion group on it.

I got my copy today. Sounds like there is interest in the meetup. I’ll go through it tomorrow and try to suss out a structure for a series of meetings and come back to get your feedback.

Thanks for posting. After seeing this I ordered a copy of the book, and would like to participate. I also have the Gore/Gillet book. As a person with hearing loss I think the acoustic testing will be helpful as I get going on my first acoustic build in many years.

Thanks for surfacing this. What is the groups thought on frequency to meet? Seems like the book would lend itself to either bi-weekly (if we were motivated to keep up) or monthly. Thoughts?

My wife’s book club meets monthly. Scheduling becomes more challenging if we try to meet more frequently. But I’ll try to keep up whatever the schedule winds up being.

My copy of the book arrived a couple of days ago. I would be happy sit in on any discussions you may have. Maybe even ask a stupid question from time to time if that's OK.

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe consider a time other than Saturday afternoon. Or maybe what I mean is, poll the participants regarding what day/time works best for the most people.

Well if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Trevor and Gerard should be feeling well flattered!

Having done a (very) quick shufty at the book today it looks awfully like a precis of the G&G book.This may not be a bad thing if people don't want to fork out for the big books, and want to avoid a lot of maths. I do worry though that reducing the scope so much that some serious information may be lost.

It does give good descriptions of measurement techniques which has to be a good thing.

Hope that doesn't sound a bit rude. It's meant as sensible criticism.
