Being new to woodworking I have a question about router bits.
For routing CF rod channels, Truss rodd channels, tenon channels, what is
the best type of bit?
Basically what are the differences and advantages/disadvantages of
1. Straight flutes
2. Downcut spiral
3. Upcut spiral.
My 1/4 inch is dull and needs replacing/sharpening and I am curious what
to replace it with. Currently I have a downcut spiral

Im not hot on down cut or up cut router bits I like straight fluts. I do suggest 3 flut vs 2 flut. They run truer and cut cleaner

I strop my bits on leather regularly but I dont sharpen because you can change the diameter pretty quickly. this means I buy a new bit when it is not cutting efficiently.

Only carbide bits and I sharpen with a small credit card size, fine grit diamond plate. You only need touchup the flat of the cutter.

Andy, this single flute bit is ideal for the Allied truss rod slot. It cuts a slightly narrower groove than a double flute. Nice snug fit for Allied's rod.

I like downcut, two flute end mills. Carbide steel is good. Never tried HSS. I don't use them enough to worry about sharpening. I just replace them when they start getting dull. For wider cuts in a router I use garden variety carbide tipped router bits.
