If you have a guitar that you are going to drill a 1/2" hole for a endpin jack
and there is no hole already. Do you?
A) Drill a 1/2" hole with a brad point
or
B) Drill a small pilot hole and then use a step drill to enlarge the hole

I would use the step drill. Also tape the end graft over with masking tape to avoid chipping.

For mine I use a pilot hole and a reamer.

Drill a hole and use a hand reamer to get it to the final size.

Get a piloted reamer...and check the diameters; you may find that most end jacks are really 15/32" diameter. See the discussion on drilling tuner holes eslewhere in the Forum.
Replace the "pilot" with the equivalent drill diameter, tape off the area as mentioned, find the center point and punch a small starting dimple with an awl, then drill and ream in one action. Do go slow with any drill on a finished instrument, no matter what method you choose.
