How is the bracing different for a 12 vs 14 fret? Can you take a 14 fret plan and adapt it or is it completely different because of bridge placement? What is the scale length? Etc. Etc.

You have to push the bracing around a little for the new bridge location. Don't push it to hard or it'll fall over.

I've built one 12 fret Dred, and I think it was the best guitar I've built so far. I was going to keep it but a local bluegrass player takled me out of a couple of weeks ago and I sold it. I play fingerstyle and he is a killer flatpicker so it's probably in a better home.
Mine had a standard Dred scale, 25.4. The body is longer, 21", and the soundhole is moved a little lower. The upper bout is usually extended up to make up one fret difference, and the bridge is moverd back to make up the rest of the difference. I love the 12 fret shape, a lot curvier than a regular Dred.


The bracing has to change, but you have several options. With the bridge moved tword the tail you have to close up the X-brace angle a little or move the X-brace down so it still catches the wings of the bridge.   You can also make the bridge a little wider, or some combination of these options, or maybe something else I haven't thought of.

Lance needs to weigh in on this one. His slope-shouldered 12 fret dred was absolutely stunning!

I played and heard Lance's and it was loud, sustaining and very sweet in tone.

I have built 3 deep body 00's, about 4 1/2 inches or more - awesome guitars. I use my own pattern, so doesnt make much sense to compare 12,13 or 14 fretters - the X shifts some in all of mine.

Lance's is a Martin Slope 12 fret. Very worthy of consideration.
