Very cool!!! Thanks for posting, John.

How much time does it take most guys to fashion a neck It took at least 80 interrupted hours for me to do this operation with a spokeshave, files, chisels and hand sanding.

He obviously is one step below CNC speed. While I'll never be this efficient nor have so much equipment, his jigs, fixtures and gauges are something anybody could build to improve their skills.

Roughing in a neck with rasps, spokeshaves, files takes me about an hour, hour and a half. The heel itself takes a good 2 hours, though. Rest of the blank kinda depends on the initial state of the wood.

I recently finished a couple of new neck jigs, One that shapes the tenon and one that shapes the heel contour (the sides of the heel). This speeds up neck shaping considerably. I also use my new airpowered handheld drum sander which I'm still getting comfortable with. You have to be carefull with that thing, it can be agressive if you let it. Then I go to rasps and sanding blocks of various shapes including spindles of different sizes on dowel handles. I think shaping a neck takes me about 2 to 3 hours and that does not include anything but the actual shaping of the neckshaft and heel. John How38377.7218055556

I have been recently making necks very similar to ryan (tools wise) with a high speed Porter cable pnuematic sander and files, but I also use the belt sander some too. It would take me about 2 hours to do what Kevin did there taking it from a rough assembled neck to fully carved.
