I’m pleased to say hello as a new member, former lurker, and lutherie enthusiast. When I started building my first guitar in 2000, I just knew I would be in it for the long run. Six years and six classical guitars later, I am certain that I will spend the rest of my life in lutherie discovery. As a biochemist, lutherie is my antidote to today’s high tech, virtual world. Somewhat ironically, it is today’s internet technology that allowed me to learn the important subtleties in guitar construction--through the reading of many different newsgroups such as this, and the contribution of many generous and talented people. I don’t know why I only recently found this group, but I’m very thankful to all of you for its existence.

I enjoy playing classical guitar, but playing has decidedly taken a back seat since I started building. I recently moved from St. Louis to the Philadelphia area and am currently building a new shop. I hope to start building a couple of steel string instruments before year's end because I think there is a lot to learn that can help my classical building.

Here are a few recent photos of one of my classicals in progress. The specs are: Engelmann spruce top, ziricote back and sides, snakewood binding, rosette of dyed and natural veneers, elevated fingerboard, French polished shellac.

Regards,

Gary Lee

Gary, welcome!

Wow, that guitar looks AMAZING! Beautiful woods, sharp miters and the FP looks superb. What kind of neck joint do you have? Looking forward to seeing the guitar finished with the neck and elevated fingerboard.

Hi Gary:

Welcome to the OLF!

WOW -such a beautiful guitar and nice staging for the photo

If I may ask, why did you move to the Philly area?

We all look forward to hearing from you as the shop progresses and this lovely guitar is finished up.

Remember this forum likes pics!

Nice! I like how you carried the rosette pattern onto the end graf (I'm a terrible speller). Will it be on the tie block as well?
Thanks for sharing and coming out of lurkdom...

Welcome, Gary. Glad to see you've emerged from lurkdom to inspire us with gorgeous guitars like that, and to teach us how to make them!

Can't wait to see photos of the completed instrument. The designs I'm working on and building include elevated fretboards and adjustable bolt-on necks, so I'm very interested to see how you're doing your neck/body joint.

Welcome, Gary. It just stuns me how many "hobby builders" make such lovely instruments. But yours stands out!

Gary,

Are you sure you didn't drop a "0" when you wrote that you've only completed 6 guitars?!

That's outstanding work! Your bold rosette is very distinctive and appealing.

I'm hoping you'll offer some wisdom on your French Polish technique as time goes on.

Hi Gary...

Really nice guitar.
Your choice of woods is fantastic.

You will have to tell us about your experience with French
Polish. It looks like you have mastered that aspect of guitar making is the finish.

Welcome to the OLF.

Thanks for sighning up and have fun.

Regards,

walterK

Hey Gary,

Welcome to the OLF

What a stunning guitar! Superb in every aspect, very well done.

I too am really looking forward to your future input to this forum and would also like to see your FP method explained as well as some insight into how you put together that beautiful rosette.

Cheers

Great looking wood and great looking work. You've got it bad don't you?

Keep it going. Send lots of pics, I know it's wrong but we can't stop looking.
