Mike, I think Bruce meant the Atlas jointer. I'd love to compare notes on the 618's and others, though. Mine is a 101 series. I have the original owner's manual for the chuck and it's dated October, 1948.

Sorry to go off topic.

Hello fellow olfers
Newby Dean Here!

I've been making high end furniture for 30+ years and have owned or still own many jointers. The absolutely hands down best to use for luthiery is not a jointer.
woodworker.com,( item # 95-430),and others sell a 8" convex sanding blade for your average 5/8 arbor table saw. you put it in and tilt your saw over to 3 degrees which allows the board to enter without touching the leading edge of the blade. It takes off up to 1/64" per pass for the straightest, most square edge you will ever see. No tearout, no millmarks, no casehardening which causes glue joints to fail, just a perfect amount of surface abrasion to accept the best glue line. Takes up all of 8" hanging on a nail, and costs about 35$ plus the sand paper.

Hi Dean,Welcome to the forum. I checked out the convex sander blade and it looks very promising BUT I don't use or have a table saw at this time so I'm out of luck.I will keep this in mind if I do decide to get a table saw.
I'm still looking for a good small jointer for my small shop. The search goes on. Thanks a lot for the post.

OK, not trying to resurrect an old thread, but I just finished getting new benchtop jointer, and I'm in love with it. I found a new, in-the-box Palmgren benchtop off Craigslist, and contacted the guy. Bought it for a song. So this morning, I reworked my main collector trunk line, got it together and made a few test runs. I love it. This unit has an internal impeller that throws chips out hard and firm, which resulted in zero woodchips being thrown. The cuts are perfect, and dead flat - if my granite plate is any indication.

I think it's going to be a very useful tool.
