Just a thought for an OLF Arkansas Event.

I was contacted by Matt Jacobs from Pine Bluff about a shop visit. He's new, a military type cat from the Arsenal. With a keen interest in Acoustic Guitar....

So, Letseatpaste and Old man, what are you doing on August 19th?

I'll give a free set of tonewood to the first six luthiers who attend to help defray fuel costs. I dropped fifty bucks just going to Memphis last weekend, so that's one tiny incentive, besides the best luthier fellowship around.

Maybe I can get my brother-in-law to give us a short concert on some of our guitars and you guys can jam. No booze, dry county.... sry. There are a few local builders I can invite as well.

Yipeee!   That's what I say. I will have to check with my social organizer to see if I'm free. I'm very sure I want to do it, but I think she said the grand kids were coming then. But she also said they were staying with the other grandparents, so it's possible.    I'll get back with you, Bruce, tomorrow. Zoot! Just for showing up! Wowzers! Oh, and it will be nice to meet ya'll, too.

Ron

No need for bribery, I think I'm in... I may be able to convince a buddy or two to go as well.

No bribery, just a cost of fuel adjustment. I have a stack of tonewood you would not believe. Besides, why not just have a party instead of a brunch with one, ay?

IF Jon'de B'ham can come and maybe Steve C. with his Alembic. A short jam would be fun as well. These guys go way back to junior high with their rock band.

Hey Bruce,

I should PM this, but figured someone else might have an answer, too.

Are there any good hardwood dealers/lumberyards down your way? I'm looking to build a bit of furniture (computer desk, etc), and as far as I know there's no good local source around here in Northwest Arkansas. I don't need anything too exotic, just looking for maple, walnut, cherry, etc... I might just end up trying out Internetlumber, but that seems pretty expensive.

Jon, try Hogan's Hardwood Tulsa, they used to be Paxton's Wood Source. In the Little Rock area they also have a store. An order of $300 nets free delivery and they travel the state. Of course they may have upped that now that fuel is sky high.

Rod, come on down, you can sell this B and S set on Ebay and offset your plane fare, just a little.....

John Mayes, it's a ways for you to travel, but you'd be welcome too. Can you guys think of anyone else to invite?

I would like to make it if I can get my crazy schedule worked out.I'm in Memphis. Keep me posted on the particulars and I'll start working on my boss about my schedule.

Hi Jimmie, Gosh, we could have dropped in for supper the other night in Memphis... grin.

You bet, come on. We'll probably get together Saturday Morning when everyone can make the trip, hang out 'til lunch. I think it would be better to eat onsite, but we might opt to go out? Depends on what everyone wants to do.

I figure a few hours of shop time, which is air conditioned would be plenty. Maybe spend some time pawing over each others guitars and trading lies.

I wish I knew if anyone else were interested, I just don't know how far someone would be willing to drive for a few hours of fun together? I know you are looking at 6 to 7 hours on the road round trip.Dickey38938.7535185185

Saturday morning would be great, but not too early... :) I think we're looking at about 3 hours or so. Hopefully I'll bring two guys with me, too. I'm definitely in, though.

Hey Y'all
I've been away from a computer for a few days, but you can definitely count me in.

I'll bring some of the stuff I've been working on.

I'd encourage other attendees to so the same, a sort of guitar show and tell.

See ya there,
Matt Jacobs

I don't have any completed instruments, but I've got the box closed up on my #1, I'll bring it. Maybe I'll get a chance to bind and purfle it before Saturday. I'd love to get some firsthand constructive criticism and/or comments.

Okay, check the thread in the OFF TOPIC Forum too. Just so we are all on the same page. What do you think about a mini-concert with some locals? We might have to feed them, but it'd be fun for them to come briefly, play a little, have lunch and boogie.

Bruce, I'd like to try and make it over as well. Maybe Scooter would like to go and I know a couple of other builders that might be interested. What are the details as to location?

Chris, we may just have another then...

Dave, it's at my House on Skyline Drive, my shop is out back. 1815 is the number. Our area is bisected by two major highways, I-40 East/West, Highway 7 North/South. We are half way between Little Rock and Fort Smith. There are four exits on the Interstate, any will work.

Guys,

I have a neighbor here in Houston who is from Russellville. He just got back from a vacation up there, in fact. Been kinda warm up there lately, hasn't it?

It's about a 9 hour drive from Houston to RV, though, and given my other commitments, while I would love to attend, I won't be able to make it this time. Maybe us Texas-based guys can arrange for a centrally located Texas get-together (there are a couple of OLFers in the Austin area, aren't there?) some time in the not too distant future.

Best,

Michael

Michael, it's only a sixty minute flight to LR and a 1hour 15 minute drive from Little Rock.

We'd love to have you or any other OLFer. 101 today.... in the shade.

Bruce,

I appreciate the warm invite, and all, but as I mentioned it's really more the "other commitments" thing that has me stuck around here for now. Not to mention the fact that my bank balance is still recovering from the trip I took to Connecticut last month for the 10-string festival . . .

Best,

Michael

Sorry to go on this little rabbit trail, but it's Arkansas specific...

Have any of you been to Nations Hardwood in Prarie Grove, AR (west a bit of Fayetteville)? Seems like the real deal for hardwoods. I found this directory listing, seems like it might be a good place.

I also searched Google Groups to see if anyone had any comments about it, and found this quote from Doug Stowe (author of boxmaking and various woodworking books):

"Going to Nations is like going on a pilgrimage. You will like it. Deer season is over so they should be open."

Back to the subject at hand... The guys that I'm hoping will come with me next Saturday are my college bud Dave Murray, who I flew out to N. CA with to take Harry Fleishman's class a couple years ago, and my friend from church, Chris Clendenen, who attended Roberto Venn back in the 80's (and a pretty diehard Keaggy fan).
