Have any of you used Goncalo Alves for luthiery? I am looking at buying a very nice piece of almost perfectly quartersawn to make a guitar out of and wanted to see if any of you thought this may or may not be a good idea. Thanks in advance.

I just started building a classical out of goncalo. So far I've only joined & thicknessed the back, and bent the sides. No problems with the either operation.

I built a 12-string from it. I like working with it a lot; have used for turnings previously. I would say it is about as hard as hard maple and a little denser, and takes a better polish. Similar to hard maple in its tonal properties, which I would describe as neutral. If I were doing it over, I would use a clear filler.

I've got a plank of G.A., soon to be sliced up into sets. Here is a pic with alcohol splashed on it. This plank is about 8 inches wide.

And a couple of back sets.


This wood is extremely variable with no two pieces looking the same. Unless they are from the same log, then they can be remarkably consistant. The best wood comes from Central America. There is a Brazilian variety, but it has less color and is less dense.
