I don't think I have ever seen tortoise used as a purfling. I love it as a binding. Sound like a very interesting idea. show pictures please when bound

Bob,

I only know where it is available in ukulele size pieces but I do have a suggestion. Try backing it with white to brighten the tortoise shell and bring out the color. It is available at the Hana Lima ‘Ia online store.

A bit of trivia here. Martin's 18 and 21 series prior to the mid 60s used celluloid tortoise without a backing. The unfinished 18s' mahogany back and sides under the bindings was light enough to bring out the tortoise color. The purfling took care of the top binding. On their 21 series, the top had the purfling around the top for backing the binding like the 18s, but they added a white purfling around the back, except for the D-21.
