I finally got tired enough of trying to work on instruments on a conventional
workbench so I built what I believe really works. The advantages are obvious
and the workstation only takes up a 24" square footprint. See it at:

Sylvan, great design. I was looking last night through the Lee Valley catalog and came across their Carver's bench and thought that it would sure come in handy. However, after seeing your design I think I'll go that route and save $600. Your shop fixtures never cease to amaze me. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Fantastic idea! Simple, easy to build and seems to work very well. I especially like the centre that comes out and the doweled neck holder... Very good!

Very Nice Sylvan, it is a great idea for people, short on space. How high is your total unit 36" to 40"? I was trying to judge by the stool. I always find my back does me in if the work table is to low. I am using workmates and dressers for my system right now but you have inspired me to think differently, thanks!!

Sylvan can I just come and live with you for a couple of weeks??, you have the coolest jigs I have ever seen..

I was doing something similar based on a design by Kevin Ryan but now I'm going to incorporate some of yours into it as well.

I like the idea of the neck holder - I have 3/4" round dog holes in my
workbench - I might make a little neck holder like yours w/ a 3/4" (11/
16?) dowel instead of 7/8 and use it in the dog holes.

Thanks for the compliments. I"ll try to answer some of your questions and
give a little more explanation. The bench is 34" high, exactly the same as
the others in my shop. It would be very easy to make it higher simply by
increasing the size of the "box" on top. 3/4" dowel would work just fine. I
used 7/8" because I had it around the shop. No plans are available since it
was made "as I went from an idea in my head". Initially, there were no
drawers on opposite sides of the slider. Once it was made there were those
two large openings on either side of the slider - perfect for drawers, so I
made them to fit the openings. For a long time I was thinking a drawer slide
for the slider until I finally realized that a tight rabbet was all it needed. I
have found that, when solving a problem, usually the simplest way is the
way to go. It certainly was here!
