16-20 Compound

OK, I voted for a straight 16" as that is what I tend to use, I'm toying with the idea of trying a compound, probably 12-16 for a build in the near future (If I can persuade Russell to cut the radius for me on his jig.

I voted straight 16 cause that's what I've always used. I too am toying around with the idea of something like a 16/20.

When playing I can't feel the difference between a 16" straight and a compound. Perhaps I'm a bit ham fisted but if I can't tell the difference why go through the trouble of making a compound radii.

compound 12-16" here

I'm with most....16 straight
but would consider 16-20 compound.

So John I gather you are setting up to add another another couple standard components to you sites offerings. I think that's cool. Also are you planing to offer these pre-slotted? not that I care as I slot my own boards. If I had my rathers I would like to see these with both long edges good a parallel to each other. That is why I dislike StewMac's pre radiused blanks. One edge is square and straight and the other may or may not be parallel to the other, and of course it the edge that indexes to one or more of my jigs

My goal is to solve all of these problems for the guy who doesn't have time to buy, radius, slot, taper, index, bind, and/or glue fingerboards.

There'll be a host of products that work together as a system coming very soon.

First, I have to clear the plate a little of work that is way overdue (sorry Hesh, and Gary, and Brock, and Lance, and Michael, and Ken, and Keith, and Andy...)

Ohooooooo sounds like laminated necks premounted fretboarded are coming soon. before long I won't need to anything but bolt thing togather .

I laugh now but after I bought my first set of necks from John I was so happy with them I threw away my spoke shave .........Not!!....... But I do love the necks

I don't post much...........as you've probably noticed, although I do visit every day, but this subject is of particular interest to me right now.

I'm trying to make a compound radius sanding block. I haven't done the maths yet, but in case someone else has.....is 16"/20" the norm? What I'm trying to get at is......if I was to start with a nut width at aproximately 43mm, tapering to say 60mm at the other end, does 16"/20" keep the finger board at an even thickness throughout its length?

Michael...My thoughts on the cmpd radius would come from building electrics for the past 10 years. As you know the older models (Strats & Teles) had the 7.25" radius, great for chording, but difficulty for bending notes. Some players are somewhat apprehensive about fretting out when bending notes, especially higher up on the neck. So, I began using Warmoth necks, everyone liked their compound radius 10"-16", & it was a big improvement higher up on the board. I used Warmoth necks for years, until recently I have been using USA Custom Guitars necks that have a 7.25"-10" cmpd radius, which I like because they're closer to vintage neck specs, and your chording & bending is still facilitated.

Now that I am focusing mainly on building acoustics, my thoughts on a compound radius for acoustics, would only seem to go that way. The Martins I have, have the 16" radius, & to me, it seems they would play easier w/ the 12-16 formula, since I struggle w/ them now at times. That's my basis for why I'd favor a cmpd radius for future builds...

So...all I am saying is that I think the cmpd radius would turn a mediocre playing guitar into a better/easier playing guitar...IMO! Now, I'm sure this is debatable, & everyone's playing style/technique, likes/dislikes are different..but it's my way of thinking.

Of course, as I am saying this, I just recieved 8 Martin fretboards that have the flatter radius. I am still in the 'learning stage', & w/ a long way to go!
Also...I did edit my boo-boo from feet to inches...
