Just thought I'd share pics of one in progress, don't know why but it reminds me of ice cream every time I look at it.

Wow! That's gonna be a looker, Russell. I can see ice cream too. Mmmmmmm. I like that rossette a lot. Can't wait to see it with some hot fudge sauce errr, a finish on it.

Walnut and toffee swirl!!! For some strange reason that guitar is making me rather hungry.

Yes Sorry a few details

The Woods Are

Walnut Back and Sides
Lutz Spruce Top (My first adventure with Lutz its hard to get me away from Euro)
The Rosette is Walnut, with Madrose Dots and Edging and Spruce Dots

The Bindings are Madrose
The Purfling is Satin Wood and Walnut.

It will be a 24.9" Scale OM with a Cherry Neck, Madrose Fingerboard, Bound in something hard but Walnut Coloured.

Waverley Tuners.

Russell, that looks great! The walnut look lucious! How wide is the satinwood portion of the purfling? I eas thinking about doing the same thing with a line of curly koa, was it pretty difficult to install?

Dave Each piece is 2mm wide, I have done the purflings in a three piece configuration thats over 5mm and still got them to bend.

I just glue them up with Waterproof PVA, then bend them on there edge in the fox bender, I tape them into the center of a package with the bindings.

They are fine to install once you have them bent, I always make extra as you occasionally break one.

I nearly bought waterproof PVA for my bindings, but suffered with AR glue instead.

Another nice one, Russell! I like your wood choices--looks good enough to eat! That lutz top look great! I've only seen medullary silking like that on the best redwood, until now.

Be sure to come back with the completed instrument, so we can drool...er...comment on it.

Thanks for the info Russell! Would Titebond II be a good choice as a waterproof PVA to use for this process?

It looks great, cool rosette too.

Going with the theme, here is a shot of the only elctric I have done, my own personal bass. I use it in a 50's band. It is named "The Creamsicle." I have no idea why I sprayed it like that, I don't even like ice cream all that much.

Thanks again Russell! BTW, I forgot to ask, what is your method for cutting those thin strips like the satinwood? Do you think the tablesaw with a Freud Diablo blade would do it?

I don't own a table saw, I just rip them in the bandsaw then run the through my drum sander, i'm sure that the table saw would be better though.

I find the waterproof PVA works well, you sometimes still get some minor delamination with it, but usually it is fine, you need to let the glue dry for at least 24 Hours, before bending.

/\ Nice to remember for next time. I had the waterproof PVA in my shopping basket; that's how close I came to buying it!!

You get serious delamination with AR. I found the best way is to let the "joint" or whatever you want to glue stay open for a minute, then adhere. It's easy to starve with AR.Sam Price38955.6206134259

Now when I post pictures of it it's going to be compared to yours . I bet your going to use a cherry neck as well aren't you? Good job I decided not to use Mad rose binding after all, though seeing your's I might change my mind again. And I will be staying faithful to my Euro tops. (My Lutz is reserved for a Black Limba OOO.)

Walter your right there, Russell is one of the best builders I know, not only is his wood selection and aesthetics top notch, his execution is first rate. But most importantly, they sound wonderful. I would be mighty proud to own one of his.

In fact if Russell had been building when I was looking for and failing to find the guitars I wanted, I would not be building now, just playing a set of Russell's Avandel guitars. It would have been cheaper!

Sorry, and the bad news is it has a sister which I'm just putting the Top and Back on, it has a Douglas Fir Top Though, now I'm getting really brave

I am sure if it is built by you, your guitar will be every bit its equal.

The Madrose Bindings are the ones you were kind enough to send me.


On the Walnut this is the 4th Set I have Used, I have one other, I am Not sure how many more there are as I know the recent sides you had and set I had came from the second board, and I think it was the last.
