Hey Lance, that sounds really interesting. Let us know how it all works out.

Just out of curiosity, what is the ballpark rate for having a finish outsourced? For me, the labor hours involved in finishing were pretty substantial, especially for doing French polish. I think I could build double the amount of guitars every year if I didn't need to finish.

John, hes in Michigan, a big plus for me
the ball park, is between 300 or so, up to whatever, depending on options such as bursts, side bursts, top, side and back bursts, neck bursts et.at...
my first will be a straight up, epox fill and shoot, my next will be a arlo Guthrie tobacco burst on one of my L1 grand parlors.

Does he do the epoxy fill or do you? Does he shoot the neck and body separately and does it buff them afterwards? What products is he shooting (Lacquer, poly, urethane, WB)?

Tim he uses a catalyzed urethane finish, I dont know much about it.
And yes, its completly cured and buffed to a high gloss finish, ready for you to add the bridge and neck.LanceK38358.6193981481

Well now ya did it Lance...everyone is going to want this guy to do their finishing...the price is going up ...so is the wait ...see what ya did! Sometimes ya gotta keep it under raps... Just kidding. Keep us posted! A lot of people do that...they spend time doing the fun stuff and sub out the rest. I don't see anything wrong with that!

Lance,

Please keep us posted on your guitar when you get it back. One thing that I wonder about is repair issues. If someone puts a scratch or gouge in the guitar, can a catalyzed urethane finish be repaired very easy?

I've seeb some of the finishes on John Mayes guitars at his shop that Tony did for him. He does an exellent job. I don't make enough or worry about the turn around, and time, but if doing guitars for the market, I would sure think about contract on the finish. Just think of time saved not in the spray room. But then I don't mind finishing with the few I make each year. I hope in 06 to widen the horizons some and market a few. I may go that direction then
