That's a good one Steve. You should be quite proud! Of course, I'd choose to go ahead and put a neck on it but it that's the way the customer wants it...
Speaking of neck, are you going with an oiled neck or is Tony doing that as well?

Anthony, Colin, Donovan, Todd and Paul (sounds like the making of a fabulous rock band, eh?), many thanks gentelmen.
Anthony, help me remember about the rosette if I fail to post that.
Colin, I'll pass your comment on to my bro--who has been busy moving to NC. Nearly everything right that I accomplish (guitar-wise) can be traced back to him some way or another.
Donovan, thanks for the laugh.
Todd, you are certainly welcome, my friend.
Paul, a neck... Dang, that's right! Thanks, man. You're right, it could greatly benefit from that. (See what happens when my bro isn't around?)
Actually, I'm finishing the neck. Saves money, saves shipping, which in turn saves more money. Necks are easy to do anyway. The body is--of course-- catalyzed urethane, while the neck will be nitro lacquer. They look so very close in appearance that one can hardly tell them apart.

Thanks guys,

Steve

Beautiful, Steverino!

Just returned from a long weekend and trying to catch up on posts. I saved yours till last since you are a special Texamigo.

I love the BRW...what thickness did you settle on? Reason...I'm putting my notes together as to how I want to approach my BRW in 2 years. I'm just not worthy right now. Those curly Koa bindings are just perfect!

Also, how did you finish the neck?

Keep up the great work, Steve...can't wait to see the completed and strung up finale.

That Koa triom really sets off the BRW beautifully. Nice job Steve.

Again, thanks guys. I am flattered. I just hope the future owner likes it as well as you seem to!

JJ--let's see... the thickness (on the sides, right?) ended up something like .080", give or take a thousandth or so. Some say that Brazilian bends easily, but that is not quite my experience. Of course, my experience is bending by hand, so that may have something to do with my perception. The neck was a shot of Danish oil, followed by Qualasole, vinyl sealer, and final coats of nitro lacquer. Still building the final film.

Joe--thanks, bud. I was happy with the pix of the finish from Tony. The color of the Koa looks better under finish, and Tony has a nice way of bringing things out.

Coe--you can, and will no doubt. (And probably superior.)
I find that the inspiration of the OLF makes me work better, and try harder. For instance, last week I had to do the binding joints and miters on a Blackwood / Bearclaw SJ, and I could almost feel Todd Stock goading me on to perfection. Made working difficult. So instead, I shipped the box to him to finish it up. Be watching for it, Todd.
No, wait... that's what I wanted to do. His recent pic of a mahog guitar trimmed out in maple was quite timely for me, and the inspiration went a long way in prodding me toward my best work. That's one of the benefits of this place, I'm convinced.

So thanks again for the kind words guys, and for all the motivation along the way.

Steve

Very nice Steve. You always have a great sense of what materials belong together and of course your execution is always right on the money.

Hey Steve.... helluva guitar there! Where'd you get the brazilian? I got some just like it from Clarck's about 6 or 7 years ago.

Alain, John, Joshua, thanks mucho. You are quite kind.

Joshua--the rosewood set was a gift (a gift!) from my brother, two Christmasses ago. I've never seen anything like this at Clark's. I'm always too late, and the wood has been picked-over. Probably by YOU, huh?

Richard--the Tony I mentioned is Tony Ferguson, finisher extraordinaire. (Hope that was spelled right.)

Steve

I just saw this, what can I say? It looks beautiful! Is it the pictures, or is that Brazillian really, really dark?

Yup, one and the same. Oh, and I just heard back from Tony (Ferguson) who said it ships back home tomorrow.
He marveled at the deep dark color as well, and asked me, "Is that really Brazilian?"

Probably one of those once-in-a-lifetime sets.

I'll post pics when it's all put together.

Steve

P.S. Thanks, Arnt, and thank you Don!Steve Kinnaird38979.7110763889

Stunning! I am working on a guitar with BRW sides and back. I might have to go with Koa, too, after seeing this.

Thanks, Steve. Do you mean Koa for bindings?
You'll like the combo. And, Koa seems to have almost as much variety as does Brazilian. You should be able to find a good match for whatever shade of rosewood you have.
