Hi folks
I'm making up some bracing for top and back. I bought some spruce stock for bracing wood from an ebayer up in canada last year. Each piece is approx. 5/8 X 14inches. What do I look for to get the stongest brace from this stock, ( tight grain, wide grain, darker color)? Being new at this, I don't really know what to look for? I thought I remember reading somewhere there was a way to test it's strength. Is there?

Deflection test hard to do until you have cleaved in to brace blanks. obviously you want nearly no grain run out and the grain running length wise.

I just got a batch of Shane's bracewood a little while back. I agree with Mike! I am also a big fan of Steve's adi bracewood, just finished carving the braces on a 12-string dred this morning. It was sweeeeet!

Marc,
If I'm reading you post right the brace stock is 14" long?
Not long enough for x braces or bracing the lower back of most guitars. Should be about 17-18".
You can get finger braces and tone bars out of though.
