Can anyone tell me the advantages of having a variable speed router vs. fixed. I am looking at the P.C. 7518 and 7519. Both are 31/2hp why or on which woods would I use a slower speed? TIA

I always use mine set for fast with the LMI pattern routing but in a
router table. The slower speeds would be needed for larger diameter
molding and raised panel bits. A larger bit diameter means that the
bit is moving faster at the cutting edge thus the need for speed
reduction at the motor. Hope this helps.

You're welcome Dave. BTW I love my PC7518. It's mounted in a
home build router table and it has worked like a champ.

Variable speed is for when the kids are sleeping.

One reason for running a router slower is to reduce burning.

Some woods - cherry, for example - burn easily if you move the router too slowly when making a cut. If you run the router bit slower, you can move the router slower also, without burning the wood.
