Lance and I would like you to welcome Volcano Guitar Works as our newest sponsor. The proprietors Doug and Alan Degenhart have some of the finest Koa you will find anywhere.

You really owe it to yourself to check out their new web site www.volcanoguitarworks.com

And Alan supplied me with a synopsis of their harvesting process. I think you will enjoy this.

********************************************************
********************************************************

Logs purchased from Hawaii are loaded into containers and shipped by boat to California, where they travel by rail to Columbus, Ohio. From there they are placed on a truck and transported to our millyard in Millfield.

Once the container reaches our millyard, it is unloaded using a front-end loader.

The majority of logs are then split via chainsaw into manageable cants that are small enough to be placed on the mill.

Cants are then placed on the mill and cut into roughly ?” slices.

Guitar and ukulele patterns are then layed out on these slices and blocked out using a bandsaw. These pieces are resawn using a horizontal bandsaw, stickered, and then dried for several weeks.

... and here is a great example of the finished product. This is a set of premium 5A Koa I picked up from them not too long ago.

Considering these guys are right in my back yard I cannot tell you how excited I am to see them come aboard.

Welcome On!

Good to see the progress pics. That's cheating though splitting with a chainsaw isn't it .

I looked at that set this morning... it was between that and one other.... It was a tough decision.

I played a Morgan some time ago, all Koa, and could easily look and listen to the stuff forever. It and the stuff here shown is just gorgeous.

Welcome Volcano folks!

This is both wonderful, and terrible news.
Wonderful, because I always knew that Doug had the best Koa around.
Terrible, because I'm already wood poor. This won't help a thing.

Doug, it's just great having you here, and I really look forward to buying all your wood.

Steve
