In case you folks didn't get an email or stop by their web site, they have a good sale going on for EIR. Can't speak to the quality but at $18 a set its hard to beat.

they call it "opportunity grade" and talk about staining it... I'd be a little cautious about building something nice with it.

What else is interesting if you scroll down on the April Sale page there is a section called Extreme Makeover where he uses some rosewood stain to enhance the look of this wood and make it look like 3A or 4A rosewood. He even shows the product he uses. I thought about getting some of the wood, but I already have too much wood and not enough time to build. Good luck to someone, it is a great deal!

I saw the section on staining and thought it looked nice (10 sets worth nice). I'm not opposed to it and was originally taught to mix stain (light walnut) in with the pore filler. Of course, that would mean no epoxy (and be sure and seal the top first). Lots of fine furniture has been built with the aid of stain, why not guitars? I own a Martin EMP-NS (Night Shift)with the back/sides and neck tinted light black. Its different but I like it. Besides, I need practice wood before I destroy my zoot.

I just talked to them and they said that if you were ordering just one or two sets that it would be pretty bland gray low grade EIR but if you bought 10-15 sets you would probably end up with 4-6 sets that other than mineral streaking or minor defects would be 4A.

To get the $18 price you have to order 10 or more.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think their definition of set is 2 backs or 2 sides = one set so the total price is $36.0 for what we consider a "set".

Wow! I was going to order 10 and for some reason my email wouldn't go thru...so I figured someone was trying to tell me something. But I have gotten some real good deals from them like this on Brazilian in the past.They were wanting to move quite a bit...the sets were only large enough for parlor size guitars but the wood was beautiful. Maybe this is deja vous!

Tim, I believe that it is back and sides per set as the listing doesn't have them seperate as usual. From their site, "Taking 2 sets (i.e. 2 sets of backs and sides) will give you an idea of the limitless possibilities before committing to hundreds of sets." If I'm wrong I'll know in a couple of days. I'm a beginner and not selling at this point so it is about as cheap a set as I kind find to hone my skills. If they aren't that great, at least Toys-for-Tots will be happy come Christmas. Don A38448.8827083333

Don, I think you are making a good decision. I didn't mean to sound negative about the deal but wanted to make sure people weren't thinking it was Allied's usual stuff that they were blowing out at $18 a set.
Keep us posted as to the overall quality of the wood. If it is just color problems, it might be worth the investment. Paul

This is a great price. Will the backs and sides make much difference for beginning builders? I suspect my guitars will either be gifts or donations. Anyone think these wood sets would be worse than what the big companies use in their lower cost lines?

I'd think the difference will be aesthetic, not tonal, much like with most topwoods. They should sound great, but they might not be the prettiest kids on the block.

Sounds like I may need to build a few of those "Everly Brothers" guitars. You know, the ones that are black lacquered all over.

That might also be a good use for these sets.

Hello,

I thought I'd clarify our Indian Rosewood Special that's going on at Allied this month. When I saw what a little stain could do to a set of wider grain, bland color rosewood, I was amazed that this wasn't done by more builders. The sets take on a unique and appealing characteristic that's not usually seen in Indian Rosewood. Since we have been accumulating these sets for a while, it seemed time to offer them to you prices way below what they ended up costing us after drying, grading and matching.

In addition, we have added to the mix some tighter grain, darker sets that could easily be called high 3A to 4A sets if it wasn't for mineral, tight knots or other blemishes. We are trying to mix and match these two types when 10 plus sets are ordered.

Oh, by the way, the price is for full back and side sets. Sorry for the confusion on that one.

Glad you stopped by and straightened out the side back issue. I did place an order and can't wait to check the wood out. I agree, a little stain can turn mediocre looking wood into exceptional looking wood.
