I'm looking for suggested reading for how to use motor controls, proximity sensors, logic circuits and the like. It's not a CNC thing per se, but merely wanting to automate a process to include control of motor speed, forward and reverse and movement to one sensor to another and back.

Iv'e not seen any books or info like that in all my research David, you might try some robot books to start with. A good deal of that sounds like it could be applied that way, what specifically are you trying to automate?

Cheers

David...I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish but I just went through the same problem when trying to control speed of a motor that I am using for dish sander I am building. I ended up using a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) I purchased off Ebay to control motor speed and direction. If you want to add proximity switches it sounds like you would need to use switches in combination with relays. If you give a few more details then I am sure I could tell you what I learned recently.

Sounds like you need to learn about PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller). One of those with a few sensors should do all you need. They use them in all the custom machines at Taylor (the automatic benders come to mind)

Well What is it?

"Ahh...well, I'll tell you in a few months...."

Hi David,

Keep in mind there are several types of prox switchs out there. Adjustable Photo eyes, mechanical limits, inductive, capacitive, ultrasonic, etc. I've worked with many of these in the past as well as some "light' PLC work. I would tell you more, but............
it's a secret!
