Box elder is a maple (Acer negundo); all maples are in the genus Acer. Brock said maple, so if it's box elder, then he's correct...

The leaf on box elder is compound and looks more like an ash at first. Red, sugar, silver, bigleaf, etc. all have pretty typical maple leaf shapes. Not box elder though...

Neat stuff, Bob, whatever it is!
