Sorry Hesh, I know it is your wood mate, and I always have enjoyed watching the way you do justice to the zoot you acquire. When you were making plans to do "the burst" a while back, I stood in full support, I could see your vision man and the result was magnificent.
But I just have to say it mate, at this moment you have a selection of truly amazing wood in front of you, and this presents you with a very rare opportunity. First of all you have that excellent Lutzii top from Shane. That stuff has the most beautiful silk, it looks absolutely first class, and I myself could never consider covering it up, but you are not I.
The big issue for me however is that you have the opportunity to be one of the first builders ever to give a critical assessment of Tassi Tiger Myrtle as a tonewood, at the very least you will be the first member to post results of any findings here at the OLF.
As mentioned above, this is a species of timber which is very rare, in all realty is more rare than old growth BRW will ever be. And you had better believe it, I mean will EVER be because it's environment is much smaller, and is shrinking twice as fast.
Given that, I really must wonder about the questions that will remain unanswered once your done, I am certain it will be a fine instrument, yours always are Hesh. But once you add the further dimension of putting a solid colour on that top, it will cloud fair judgement no matter how aesthetically pleasing.
For example, if the sound is disappointing, lets say a little muffled and thin, a little too shallow on the highs or mids, is it the finish on the top? Or is it that nasty tassi myrtle? Or is it just that you don't like the sound of the first small body 00 that you have ever built? Where is the comparison to give you progression and a fair assessment of the woods at hand?
By the same token, should it sound great, as I am sure it will, just how much better could it have been if the the top were left unimpeded by that solid finish???
Sorry mate, I really respect your work, but I have too to say it, for mine I reckon that another Colonial Red Spruce Topped SJ would have been a fitting trial for the Tiger.
