Hey guys, I've been here for about a month now and I love it. I've been playing guitar for about 15 years. I've watched my grandfather do guitar repair and build multiple instruments. I just recently got into woodworking, although I grew up with most of my family as carpenters, and decided that instead of paying $3k for a factory guitar I'd rather try my hand at building. I just got my guitar wood this week, see the "I GOT ZOOT" post, so I'll start my build next weekend hopefully. Thanks everyone for the warm reception. I've only been here a few weeks, but I feel like one of the "guys" :)

Hi Guys
I am new to the craft and have built 8 guitars so far. 6 steel strings and 2 electrics. I have really enjoyed what I have been able to learn from you guys and am looking forward to doing more. I am a high school science teacher and my dad was a building trade instructor. I teach at a small Christian school and last year for our interim term I had six kids build dulcimers, all finished and playable in 8- 2.5 hr sessions. My dad and wife helped! Will try and figure out how to add some pics. Dang its hard.

Welcome, Karl. Sounds like you have a good bit of experience, we need to see some pics of what you've done.

BTW, I'm a science and math teacher also.

Hi Guys I have been lurking around here for about a month now trying to read all I can. I still haven’t completed a guitar yet. I did start on one back in 85 but life got in the way and it is still waiting to be completed. I had a back injury about a year and a half ago and surgery for it a year this Oct still trying recover so I have plenty of time to read and study on the subject.
I have built 4 Street Organs, as that is an instrument that I do know how to play.
Thanks for letting me lurk and I hope to be able to complete the Guitar sometime soon.
Jay

P.s. Dave I am also a Kansas boy from NE of Abilene that got transplanted to the Ozarks. I’m now near Springfield Missouri

Looking forward to that Jake, you will find that it will help the build process a great deal too, pics are a quick reference to have handy!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome.
It is so nice to be in a group (luthiers in general) that are so open to share info. Kinda like teachers. Maybe because they are both impossible to master.

Anyway I was wondering what program you use to resize?
What I have done is use the windows xp interface to "mail" and resize. That works great until I try and save them to my desktop and it doesn't save it as a jpeg. I should know how to do this but I can't figure it out. It is probably right in front of me.

Thanks for your help.

Karl

Welcome guys!

Karl, I was going to reinstall Photoshop on my home computer after I upgraded the machine, but I the CD with the software was gone.    So I checked Download.com and found a freeware program called "FastStone Image Viewer" that had good reviews. It works very beautifully! You can do a lot more than re size your pictures, it is sort of a Photoshop light.

Ok
Here we go
I don't know the order but....
Les Paul Copy the only one I am going to do. It has my own headstock. BTW

Birdseye maple steel string. All maple except the soundboard sitka, bracing, and the bridge pins.

1st cutaway

and one of my guitars being played onstage at my church at the release of the album Scattered Around elev8world.com or purevolume.com/brandongrissom
He was my guinea pig for me to try and teach someone. He loves his guitar. He built the box and I did the binding to completion.

What do you think?

I'm Richard Hankey, and I build ouds. I made my first in 1968 because I couldn't find one to buy. I tried to make it with ouds and music in the '70's but went bust and re-joined the grind to support myself in the '80's. I took a hiatus until I re-entered the fray in '95. I've written a build instruction book and restore, repair and sometimes make new as a part time hobby business. My site Oud Fans Everywhere also has some historical information about the great oud making dynasty of the Nahat family. I hope to travel to Brazil where the last maker died to research a story of the 4 generations of oud makers.droud39017.7481712963

Hi Richard, welcome to the OLF!

What does this instrument compares to in terms of sound? A lute? A mandolin?

Very interesting instrument, i just took a look at your website, quickly but i will check it out more thoroughly, thanks

PS: You'll love it here!

Serge

Hello! My name is Vic. I am 55 years old and have been a machinist/machine repairman for about 34years. I am about halfway through my third fiddle. I am planning to try guitars and was happy to stumble across this site. Thanks for your advice and encouragement that I didn't even ask for.

Welcome, Vic! With your background, I bet you'll have a lot to add to the Forum, too.
