Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Lance is a TOTAL perfectionist. He couldn't produce something bad if he tried, because he'd sooner burn it!

It stands to reason that there's not ONE flaw in his first guitar, or any other ones for that matter!

I already posted my first about a year and half ago...we don't need to go there again.

Those of you that've joined since will just have to search the archives.

"Swallow my pride", Huh.

Well, I let the garbage can "swallow" my first guitar about six months ago.
I honestly and truly believe it is the worst craftmanship I have seen of any
of the first guitar posts. Seriously, it was that bad.

But in my defence, I had absolutely no woodworking experience, hardly
any tooling (power or handtools) and built from scratch. I also came up
with my own design and everyhing. It was most definitely a study in how
not to build a guitar.

Here's mine...A SJ modeled after my Santa Cruz F model in Cedar and Myrtle b/s. Cocobolo trim and bridge. It sounds okay, but neck is too fat for my tastes. Oh well, live an learn. And Lance, that is just sick! I can't believe that is your first. All of you have had some fantastic looking guitars. Thanks for sharing!

Well said, Hesh.

I think those who jumped in and scratch-built their first, especially those who designed their own, are the bravest souls here. And they probably learned the most. Any learning requires the learner to take a risk, get out there on a limb, fall down and keep going.

Kudos to us all for the hard work that we put into this craft, but especially to those who really stretched themselves on that first one!

ok, now some of you fine folk have posted pictures of beautiful instruments

I am not fully convinced as to the firstedness of all of them.

so.........

without any risk on ANYONE saying that this was built with any experience or skill......

here's my first.

a fretless short scale electric bass.

Mahogany, sycamore & ash

Danish oil finish

all the bits & bobs from stewmac or ebay

it's an ugly beast, but it is actually playable.......

James, what an ugly guitar, I can see why you're so ashamed of it.

Here's mine, similar to yours, also ugly:

You guys are unbelievable - talented and gifted. I think I sawed my number one in half like they do with the defects at Martin. My number two I sold for $200 to a 14 year old boy who needed a guitar. It actually played well and looked decent but many flaws. I think #3 and #4 were giveaways as well and #5 I think I sold on ebay. I am a slow learner.

I am now getting ready to start #24 (if I count all the mistakes and unfinished projects and partial builds where I lost interest). Will post #24 once I get past the thicknessing of wood. It is a brazilian with an adi top.

I'm going to go take a picture of my real first guitar. Someone needs to
buck the trend of awesome firsts.

Awright, Serge!, I still say you oughta be proud!

I have to admit, my first guitar was not my first instrument. I don't have any photos of that one, which was a banjo (I know, I know, to some of you a banjo doesn't qualify as an instrument). After that, I built one from a cookie tin for the 3 yo son of some good friends of mine. It took another 30 years before the guitar bug hit.

James Orr did it for me...the brat!
That's ok, James and I have been friends for many years now...he can get away with it, just like you can get away with pics of "The Don"...!

You know Sam, Serge, I don't know what you two are making a fuss about. Your firsts look great. I love your guitar, especially your rosette Sam. And Serge, I would never of guessed that yours was plywood if you hadn't of said anything. I'm envious of what you have done. You have completed a guitar, which is a lot more than I can say. I've stalled after getting the linings on the sides. Moving twice and injuies could be justifications for what I haven't done, but really they are just excuses. So, be proud of your accomplishment.
