I thought I would share one of my handier tools that I use extensively when setting up string height at the nut and string action at the 12th fret. Many of you may already have one.

It's a Starrett #270 Taper Gauge and is graduated from 0 - 4 mm on one side and 0 - .150" on the other. It has saved me a lot of time in shuffling through my feeler gauges. Now I can get a reading of height anywhere on the fretboard in much less time.

I'm sure that there are many other uses for it that I just haven't thought of as yet...










Great for gauging gaps for shims too.

I have a poor mans equivalent to that tool...

If you go to one of the larger auto parts chains, I found a small disk about 1.5 inches in diameter with that same tapered ramp around the diameter that is used as a quick spark plug gap tool. By rotating the disk until it feels flush with a top or other part I can quickly get the thickness of the part.

Note that the measurements are in inches (thousands) but there is a metric conversion table on the back face (necessary if you are building classical).

It cost $2.95

Im not saying it is a Starrett and they make great stuff well worth the price but this was a quick cheap alternative...I keep it on my keychain.
