A cool looking piece of walnut but it does look a little fragile.

Looks like mahogany to me .... close to the crotch of a tree .. somewhat unstable to use, it may crack down the road as there is usually a TON of tension in this kind of wood..

that one is a hard one. It is too light for walunt but can be Koa Mahogany or Makar. It is a dangerous set and would most likely crack and heave big time.
I learned the hardway too much figure is a dangerousr thing unless it is laminated to make it stable

I agree that it is probably walnut. I've seen lots of walnut that light.

My vote is Walnut and likely Claro Walnut. I agree with the others that it's a pretty scary piece. Unless it's laminated to something more stable, I'd be pretty scared to use it.

It's Monkey Pod wood, from Jeff Yong in Malaysia.
He's got a boat load of that stuff, as well as some other really cool offerings.
He had two guitars at the GAL convention made of this, and they sounded stellar.

I would have guessed African Mahogany.

I don't see where that wood would necessarily be all that unstable.

The only real issue I see is gluing all that end-grain.

You can't tell if it has runout in it from that photo. All it shows is the color differences in the grain. I don't believe that's indicative of runout. If it were, then ribbon mahogany would be loaded with it.

The appearance is striking , how stable is this . The runout would scare me but then flame maple and kao are pretty stable woods

I think it looks cool! I thought it was walnut too! If that's stable, where would somebody, come get some(as Duke Nukem would say)!

Check out the chainsaw-hewn board behind the monkey-pod set...

Weather-worn, it makes a very cool looking backdrop...

Great pic...

I think it is Goncalo Alves - or at least, it looks very, very similar.
