Well after a lot of debate this turned out to be the final piece. It's one of the toughest inlays I have done yet (over the fingerboad that is). It was done all with basically .06 shell, and the radius was like inlaying over a baseball bat. It's a hybrid 7 string violin/viola.
I had to go in multiple times and re-cut, re-size, then after it was all inset and glued I had to go back in yet again and route out two large gold pearl slightly sub-level pieces and replace them, then re-sand.
It took many, many hours.

If you ever see something like this on a violin anywhere let me know. I would be surprised!

the radius curve on the fingerboard to show it to you. It's not a typical 4 string violin.
It's a 7 string hybrid. Imagine taking a styrofoam coffee cup and pushing the sides in about 4 mm each, that is what the curve is like at the end.
Yes I have seen Amy Hopkins work on violins. It's really nice, but she used a lot of recon on that one (easy to get very thick) and she heat bent a lot of it. Something you can't do with shell. I spoke to her about it at the last ASIA symposium. She's as nice as the day is long, and a great inlayer as well. She actually has her young student doing most of her cutting for her now, so she is more of a team effort than an individual.

I was happy with this piece that with all the sanding issues, curve, etc.. my black pearl stayed black, and my gold pearl stayed gold. I spent extra time searching for the best most color-through pieces.

Absolutely amazing! Bravo! Yet another installation from one of my favorite inlay artists.   I can only imagine how difficult it was to inlay over that radius and have preserved the shell colour as you did.

This piece just blends so nicely with the canvas you worked with. Your work has truly become unique and distinctive.
