When visiting the archives and re-reading the thread on vacuum clamping systems I noticed that Frank Finnochios set up didn't have a membrane in it. However, other pictures posted had the membrane. Is it necessary to use this membrane to get clmaping pressure or not?
I am also interested in knowing what became of the survey on vacuum systems.

Yes... he has a membrane.... it is clear, rather than the opaque one other people are using.

He chose this system so he could see if anything shifted once the vacuum pressure was on.

Yeah, it really worked great.

I need to find someone who can mill some corian stock for me like he has. That is a great idea. It is a very compact set up.

And his top plate was just 2 pieces of MDF that had been circle cut with a router and sealed with a couple of coats of light poly finish.

Brock - maybe we could look into a group purchase of corian radius dishes?

Yeah. that makes sense.

I will be seeing Frank this week. I will ask him where he had those made and what is involved.

I don't know much about industrial machining... so I have no idea where to even look for something like this.

I suspect it would make things easier if we all bought the same sizes. i.e. 15' / 28'    Don't you think?

I think I would actually prefer the system that has a radius dish underneath out of birch ply and have the top part hinged to it as oppossed to the corian set up.

I would be in for a couple dishes if the price is on too high.

no particular reason and I suppose I could be swayed to go the corian route. It just sounds a bit more expensive and I already have birch radius dishes here at the shop.

clear vinyl is available from joewoodworker.com.

if you are thinking of going to vacuum clamping for just about any application he has a lot of goog advice and excellent prices on a ;ot of components.

it is well worth the time to read what he has to say.crazymanmichael38460.8840046296

A couple more questions...
How do you manage glue squeeze out clean up when working with a vacuum clamp system?

also, if using hide glue, would I have time to get all the braces in place and still get the sytem ready to go before the glue sets?

To actually glue the back and top to the rims it looks like I still need the go bar system or other method, is this correct?

I am trying to justify the several hundred dollar investment to go to the vacuum system.

Brock have you tried routing Corian with a router? It is easy to machine with wood bits. Just a thought.

if you have a compressor you can get started for $35 or so plus the cost of your radiused dishes and the membrane and wood for the frames, say $40 or so.

if you haven't got a compressor, look on ebay and garage sales, auctions, the like. i got started vacuum clamping with my two stand alone vacuum pumps for $5/ea.

once you have it you will find uses for routing and doing any numbwer of things.

Hi Robbie,

I EMailed the vendor this AM, encouraging him to look at the survey, and other posts, register, and chime in. I suspect I'll hear from him shortly. If not I will call him. He's not used to luthier's needs, but has everything for us. I encouraged him to put a couple of packagers together. I suggested he look at LMI's for a reference. Keep your ears open....
