Could be BRW. Brick red is more likely that than Honduran.
Honduran usually is more in the pink to mauve range of colors from my experience, and this example seem to look more like that than BRW.

Have you tried the scratch & sniff method for determining the type of rosewood?

Hesh my guess would be HRW too. Although the HRW I have cut doesn't look as brown and is a bit lighter in color. I suppose it could be BRW.

As Tony said sniff it. Bubble gum is the first thing that comes to mind when I sniff Brazilian. Hondouran will be a bit more "spicy".

I say Honduran Rosewood. Honduran has open pores as well. There are also two kinds of Honduran Rosewood. Dalbergia Stevensonii and one other kind that is lighter but I cant remember the name. I have seen several sets that look just like your picture Hesh.

Yeah I read that nonsense about HRW being easy to finish, no pores ..hah .... bunch of 'horse droppings', as Col Potter would say. the two sets I built with had pores that looked like small canyons .. 2-3 inches long.

Hi Hesh,

If the color is more correct in the first photo, I'd guess Granadillo (Platymiscum yucatanum.) Even the second photo is correct for oxidized Granadillo. "Rings like a bell." Very, very stable wood. Very hard, heavy (dense), very small pores, finishes to a glassy luster.

Now, you did throw me with the fact that you can't small it, because Granadillo can be almost as sweet and fragrant as BRW.

How big is this piece? If big enough for backs (even for a parlor), I wouldn't cut it up for bridge plates. It's hard to find Granadillo wide enough for backs, even if only one edge of the board is quartered. (However, the tangential shrinkage of Granadillo is so low that it is one of the few woods that I would be confident would be fine even flatsawn.)
