How somebody who is a "extremely knowledgeable and respected luthier" could react so negatively to a new innovative method is something I'm having trouble getting my head around. There must be something more to it than just having offending their delicate sensibilities.

You got a link to that thread?

It is cool you can name other forums here.

It is generally considered in bad form to invite someone to a NEW forum without any specific reason, but if there is good info somewhere else on the web there is no reason you can't be specific.
I am assuming that this caused the wood to swell some. Did you allow everything to dehydrate prior to flush the binding and sides to each other. I am still amazed that the steamer got the wood hot enough but I do not know what your steam source is.
Michael,

The temperature of the steam as it emetges from the nozzle of these kettle wallpaper-stripers is very hot as I can attest to from personal experience when decorationg I haven't measured the exact temperature but from the gentle promptings of shmbo, the wallpaper-stripper will be in action again soon so I will stick the probe of the digital thermometer in there (as opposed to the other digital device that I used last time ) and let you know.

I suspect that for easily bendable woods such as rosewood and walnut this would work fine but would require more skill for the trickier and more figured woods.

Hats of to Martin for daring to be different "Invention in the Face of Poverty" is a good motto for a guitar builder to have.

The only possible problem I can see is with walnut steaming tends to homogenize the colors. Other than that, its a great use of what would normally be an instrument of torture - redecorating.

ARRGHHGGH!!! NO!!!! NOT DIY!!!! I'll tell you all my secrets if you don't mention decorating again!!!!

My steamer is excellent. I had to strip my entire house walls to bare plaster four years ago. One room had five layers of thick wallpaper, one had a seventies-type vinyl wallpaper that looked like painted bubblewrap.
