I know figured Maple is used for necks. Is figured mahog. used by any here to make necks? Why, why not?

Figured mahogany is not as common as figured maple, therefore more
valuable and put to more selective use. I would assume that figured
mahogany is rarely put in to use for necks because when a good piece is
found, most find it best used in a more prominent area. You certainly
could use it and I don't think it would be cause for any significant
structural compromise. If the board it was cut from was originally large
enough for back and sides though, I think those two or four beautiful
back/side sets that you lost would always haunt you.

I'm sure this comes in to play at the mill where the wood come from as
well. Figured wood is always most valuable at the surface, so I doubt
many wood sellers would want to sell it in thick planks. I don't do a lot of
wood buying, but I typically see it in 4/4, and rarely larger than 6/4 or
8/4, and certainly not quartered. You could certainly make laminated
necks from this, but again, you could also bake backs and sides.

Figured mahogany is excellent for necks is a large enough blank is found. Just as stable a regular mahogany but highly prized for its beauty...

I use figured mahogany for necks. I managed to get quite a bit of neck stock (6 pieces), like this one. They come from the same boards that my collection of figured Honduran back & sides come from. Each billet is 120cm x 12cm x 3.5cm so the stock is thick enough for V-joints. (If I mess up bending the sides I can re-saw the neck wood!)

Beautiful!! Can quartersawn billets be found or does quartersawing diminish the amount and depth of figure; if not quartersawn, would neck have to be re-inforced-SS

At no point are those billets more than 2 or 3 degrees off quarter, and as stable as they come.
