Well I haven't been posting much lately, but I have been around here a lot admiring many of the great guitars that the rest of you are working on. I thought I would take a minute and post of few pictures of one of the guitars I am currently working on. It is my first 12-string and is now ready for finishing. I'm excited to see how it sounds!

(sorry for the poor quality pics)

Top: BC Sitka (from Bobc)
binding: EIR
Purfling: Green
Rosette: Bubinga and Paua
Neck: Mahogany with 2 - 1/8" Bubinga lamination (outlined in green)
Headstock: BRW
Armrest: Bubinga

That's really gorgeous Josh... I love everything about it... The sap-wood down the back, the sound port, the rosette and that great volute with the lamination behind the headstock (and the neck lams too)... Amazing detail superbly executed!

Josh-I love it! Very nice aesthetics and I really like the slighly smaller body
size. I think Taylor was on to something when they came out with their
Grand Auditorium 12's.

What kind of special bracing is needed to build a 12?
I play 12 quite a bit in the studio and live and this is something I may try
to tackle down the road.

Can't wait to see it after finish.

It is actually my GA, which is the size of a lot of the SJs that are out there. My GA is based on the Taylor shape but is not an exact copy.

Yes I do my own finishing. It will be a Nitro finish over System 3 filler.

Chris,
My standard 6-string pattern is a double X. I used the same pattern on this with the addition of some extra bracing in the lower bout. I also made a few of the other braces a bit stronger. Before I built this guitar I had a good look inside a Marc Benateau 12-string that my friend owns. It is a smaller body than this GA I am making. I expected to find heavier bracing than I did. A lot of my thought well designing this were influenced by what I observed in this Benateau. There is a lot more tension on a 12 than a 6 and I tried to take that into consideration when I was designing it. I think there is about 80 lbs more string tension ( I have the exact numbers somewhere).

I am obviously not an expert on 12-strings so if anyone else would like to chime in with some useful tips I would welcome it.

Josh, That is a cool armrest. I like the way the binding expands on the rest, it looks cool.
Have you built many twelve strings? I like your bracing pattern, how do you think it works.

Homeboy,

I can't take credit for the armrest design. This is the style of armrest that Tony Karol does and he was nice enough to show me how it is done.

This is my first 12-string. The majority of the guitars I build are 6-strings. I have built a couple 8-string guitar-bouzoukis which are pretty cool instruments. My regular double X pattern works great on the 6-strings guitars and I think it will work well on the 12-string. The whole box rings really nice when you give it a little tap.
