The first LP purchase for me was the man in black -- John R. Cash in 1961, but the first two guitarists that really knocked me out were Carlos Santana (Santana) on the electical side and Taj Mahal (Giant Step) on the acoustic side, both in the fall of 1969. Giant Step still gets me going!

The Ventures, Chet Atkins, James Taylor, Wes Montgomery, and Jim Croce. Jerry Reed and Roy Clark also.

I don't have photos of any of them though.

This is the guy that made me start wearing a thumb pick

Lets see if any of the Aussies can pick him?

And no, it's not Jimmy Buffett

That's Peter Green from Fleetwood Mac baby.

They sure were a strange bunch.

When I was a kid, my mother was a DJ for a CF air force base and we had so many old and cool records. I remember this one very clearly even today. I mean the nightmare's

OK John, but I totally agree with you! Saw him recently (In a double bill with John Mayall Bluesbreakers)and he's still the most expressive guy out there. Nice to see him back.

The finest player of his generation, the man electricity was invented for.

Apart from the guy above, the most influential guitar players of my youth, were:

Davy Graham

Davy was the first man to show that there was life after Travis, he 'invented' DADGad, and unlocked the acoustic guitar's potential in the same way that Hendrix did with the electric guitar.

Also Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Syd Barrett, and later Steve Howe of Yes, the most underrated player.

More recently Eric Roache (who sadly recently died).

I went to a couple of master classes that Eric gave, and his freeflowing playing, just reinforced Davy's message.

I haven't even begun with the classical and lute players!

Colin
