Ok, what was I listening to in the days of yore? When I was a young, free and single student of Art and Design...

Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac.

Mark Knopfler

Dave Gilmour

It has changed since then. I like more relatively "unknown" guitarists that aren't usually in the mainstream music industry.

I hate to date myself but I'm in the same camp as Old man. My heros were:

The Ventures - wish I could remember the name of their lead guitarist.

Jorgen Ingmann - remember the song Apache in 1961?

Jose Feliciano - saw him at his first coffehouse appearance in L.A. in 1963. He played Malenguena and Flight of the Bumblebee and it blew the audience away. (me too.)

Wes Montgomery... need I say more?

Carlos Montoya - my introduction to Flamenco guitar, which led to:

Sabicas - marvelous, intricate and always in compas.

George VanEpps - wonderful 7 string guitar - walking bass line, great soft jazz.

Andres Segovia - bought my first classical LP of him in '62 and promptly wore it out listening to it.

Chet Atkins - Mr. Smooth

Doc Watkins - and still going strong.Peter J39072.3190046296

First heard Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Scuttle Buttin'" back in 1984 and I actually had to sit down after hearing it. After that my school work went South but my guitar playing improved :)

A few others that really change my life.

The Beatles

Buddy Holly

Jimmy Page

Tony Rice

Merle Travis

The most influential without a doubt was the late Hank Garland.

Hmmm. Dual guitarists actually got me wanting to play guitar.

Frank Hannon and the other guy from Tesla. (but they were great guitarists!)

Mark Ford and Rich Robinson from The Black Crowes (awesome in concert!)

When I heard those guys that's when friends told me about original guitarists, Hendrix, Clapton, Page, insert original guitar hero here.

Come on guys, I know I'm old, but nobody's mentioned Les Paul yet. I
doubt I was even in school yet when I heard the incredible and highly
polished Les Paul and Mary Ford recordings. They were as smooth as silk
and flawless. At the time my father owned about 3,000 78 rpm records
and I can clearly remember 3 or 4 of theirs in that collection that I would
play over and over. "Waiting for the Sunrise" I think was the name of my
favorite.

Classical piano until 1954 when an interest in jazz took over. That reigned until I met Jesse Fuller who taught me slide guitar in 1960 and it has been down hill ever since.

Bests regards and happy holidays.

Well if I look atthe first LP I ever bought - Deep Purple - Machine Head, which I still listen to a lot (and my kids love it as well), gotta be the one and only Ritchie Blackmore.

Shortly thereafter one of the local neighbour hood kids and I discovered the first Nugent and Aerosmith albums ... toss in some Kiss Alive, BTO, Yes and finally Eddie ....

This guy: Rik Emmett. Now if I can find one of those elusive Framus Akkerman guitars...

I have lots of favorites since I first heard Steve Howe, but I still love his playing.

First...

I am with Lance... Sort of, but mine was Gene (yes, I realize that is a bass, but it is a bass GUITAR, and I was probably 10).

After that Angus

After that Eddie

After that SRV and Clapton

After that a bunch of old dead blues guys

Now... so many I can't even name them.

Ever since I saw him on the Gong Show in '76 I've been a huge fan and he completely changed the way I look at stringed instruments.

Just a few:

Roy Clark
James Taylor
Eric Clapton
Hadley Hockensmith
Phil Keaggy
George Harrison
Vince Gill
Keith Urban
Chet Atkins
Dan Tyminski

More than these guys, my teachers, and the guys I've jammed with through the years....

It would be easy to write a long list. In fact, I started one, but the question is about "your first." And my very first guitar hero was definitely Paul Simon.

Yeah Don....Glen Campbell was a great guitarist for sure. I totally forgot him on my list, and he should be there.
