Wow, great thread! It was worth my dial-up timing out thrice!

My first music idol was Elvis. Then my babysitter, Marc, introduced me to Black Sabbath!

Then came AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, Triumph (Rick Emmett!!!) and Van Halen. Then Metallica came along, the real Metallica with Dave Mustane, not that sissy Metallica-Light!

I didn't start playing till I was 28 but have always
loved the guitar. The ones that grabbed me early
were Clapton and Page who I discovered in high
school. They carried me through college along with
Dickie and Duane. After that I drifted back in time and
the guys I learned (after a fashion ) to emulate in
my own playing were Robert Johnson, Muddy,
Elmore, Tampa Red and Robert Nighthawk. Other
great faves are Ry Cooder, Mr. Dave, Steve James
and Lowell George.

This was an easy one for me as well!

I'm right with you Lance, Ace Frehley ruled.
There was something about his solos that just stuck in my head.
Maybe it was the fact that I listened to those albums from 10 years old and
still today on rare occasions.
See if I can do it chronologically:

1) Chet Atkins
2) Duane Eddy
3) The Ventures
4) Andres Segovia
5) George Benson
6) Wes Montgomery
7) Jerry Reed
8) Gamble Rogers
9) Eric Clapton
10) Albert King
11) Jimi Hendrix
12) Noel Stookey
13) James Taylor
14) Tommy Emmanuel
15) Tommy Emmanuel

I'm sure I've forgotten quite a few along the way.

Good thread!
Dang, JJ...didn't know you were THAT old!
This list pretty much follows my guitar life..
Chet Atkins circa 1957
The Ventures...of course, "Walk, Don't Run" still comes off my fingers every other time I sit down to play.
Wes Montgomery when I got old enough to appreciate jazz (hi school in early 60's).
Clapton early on with John Mayall
Kaukonen (took some lessons in hi school)
Duane Allman/Dickey Betts...I still think "Live at Fillmore East" is the best live album ever.
Leo Kottke early recordings.
Christopher Parkening
Doug Smith

I'm sure there are more, but these floated to the forefront of my senior citizen mind!

Good thread...

He was my first, I still listen to this very day (they are working on a new album actually)...

Also in the mix are:

Jimmi Page
Randi Rhodes
David Gilmour
Joe Satriani
Kerry Livgren
Steve Vai (when he was with DLR)

There are others now but all of those shaped what I like to hear from a guitar...

Kind of putting a date on myself, but it first started for me w/ Elvis, since his was the first record I bought. I did listen to a lot of Les Paul, but the first one that grabbed me was that guy w/ the funny lookin' guitar!

Then Roy Orbison...who had 'the voice'...

Ahhh foolish me... That poka-dot flying V really threw me off... Randy had one just like it...

That is Ronson, right? Ziggy's band!

Yep Mick Ronson! You know him and Bowie were a good combo from Ziggy through Diamond Dogs. I have one of his solo albums. "Don't Worry, Just Play. It never went anywhere here in the states but is really some pretty good music. I think the problem with it here was, it was a major departure from his playing and genre style while with Bowie.MichaelP39072.6433912037

Probably Paul Simon or George Harrison. Hard to remember that far back. Oh yeah, Carlos Santana! My favorites today are too many to count.

Silly me... I didn't really pay attention to the title of the topic "Your First Guitar Hero"

I guess the first guitar players I heard that impressed me enough to want to learn what they were doing on the guitar would be Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, and Paul Simon.

A friend of mine used to own Rik Emmetts Framus .. and a bunch of his other stuff too (Rik lives about ten minutes from me - going to see him at a small venue here in a couple months actually). When i was a pimply kid in grade 9 Triumph, prior ot amy albums played my high school - you bet I was in the front row - they covered alot of Zep then, with Rik's voice, and his white Gibson double neck.

Another of my younger heros was a guy named Kim Mitchell, when he was in Max Webster (a band name they picked out of a phone book !!!) the guy could rip, and played way cool riffs - he is now the local classic rock stn afternoon DJ

How about Steve Morse of the Dregs ??? He and Steve Howe were the first 5 time all round best guitarists in the GP polls.

Those others would be ...

Rory Gallagher
Al DiMeola
Paco de Luca

I would also like to add the Rev. Willy G (thats Billy Gibbons for the un-initiated), plays with a peso ...
