Marri: A Western Australian Tonewood

Just as promised. Here are some images of Marri (also called Red Gum). Marri weighs in dry at about 850kg/cubic metre, bends well and produces a good finish. The tonal qualities of Marri are still being ascertained. One luthier has been referred to in another post indicating that Marri has merit. All I can say is that it has worked well in Ross Coole's Resonator. A lot of Marri has gum veins so finding boards that are clean and have some figure requires patience. The back set that I have posted is back sawn however a quarter sawn set would be preferable being more stable when applying a finish. From experience bendng sides can be achieved without any added moisture. A hot dry bend in a Fox bender type jig works well.

The sanded set without shellac.

A comparison between side and back pieces that have been wiped with shellac.

The back set with some shellac.

regards

Kim I have found that filling the gum veins with epoxy works quite well and can be very attractive. I wouldn't discount high figure boards with gum veins.

Hey Bob,

You got us mixed up buddy, Tim is the guy WITH the big stash of beautiful tonewood. Kim is the guy that WANTS the big stash of beautiful tonewood.

Very nice set of Marri Tim, I am with Bob, I have seen a lot of furniture made with Marri where the gum lines are presented very affectively as a feature.

Cheers

Kim

Send that set to me. I'll be happy to assist in the investigation. It's the least I can do...
