After seeing Tony Karol's step-by-step, and reading an old email I had from Alan Beardsell, I thought it was about time I gave this Laskin armrest thing a try. Here are the results so far. If anyone's interested, I'll post some updates when I get a lid on it...

As you can see, this one also has an auxilliary sound port. In for a penny, in for a pound, as they say!

The only thing I will do differently than Tony/Laskin, is to try to use a black veneer on the armrest area instead of painting it black. This is the way Al Beardsell told me he is doing it.

Here's the back, simple paua backstrip with some thin b/w/b purfling. EI rosewood back and sides.

This one will get some of Zootman's ebony binding, and an Italian spruce top with a spalted maple rosette (oval sound hole) and end graft....also an ebony "dress-up" ring around the side port.

A guy sure can keep himself busy doing this stuff, huh?

Very nice Russ
Now what are you going to do? I am in the process of making one of these things myself and would love to see you do yours.

Where did you get Tony Karol's step by step? I wouldn't mind reading what he has to say on the matter.

John

Russ:
Nice box. I too would like to see more info on the arm rest. Love the port. Mine are the same shape and location only about 1/2 the size of yours. I realy like the results of my soundports and I am sure you will like yours too.

It's in the MIMF library, i.e. you must login before you can read it. They have two search functions, one for the library and one for the current messages. Just found this out regarding this very subject.

Interesting thing about the photo-essay Tony Karol did. He glued in the armrest then cut it with the top installed, and there was a void in the wood. Talk about bummers.

Another reason to justify candleing your tops before installing them.

Thanks everyone!

Tim and John, if you would like Tony's notes, I'm sure Tracy can provide them to you. I would send them directly, but Tracy is the one who has permission from Tony to distribute them.

The next step will be to install the top, then I will cut the purfling/binding ledges as normal around most of the guitar, except for the purfling in the armrest area. My armrest will remove 3/4" from the top and the side of the guitar (45 degree bevel).

Here is a picture of the armrest support block. I made this one from spruce, but I would imagine cedar or basswood would work equally well. I just happened to have a chunk of spruce laying around.

When you see Tony's notes, you will get a better idea of it. Much simpler in pictures than in words!

Qustion. Is the armrest used mainly to use something different, for show, or does it have actual reason for use? I really don't know
Thanks

Bob,

In the finsihed guitar, the edge of the guitar in the area of the armrest will be beveled.

The idea is that your arm does not lay across the sharper "normal" edge of the guitar, but rests on the beveled area, giving more support to the arm, and spreading any pressure over a larger area, making the guitar more comfortable to play.

The void was in the 1"+ block used for the armrest itself, need a laser to see anything through that much wood. But I'm glad you said this 'cause it does sound like a good idea.

Nice job Russ

I will be trying this soon and am interested to see how yours turns out. Would you mind posting some pictures when you go to put the veneer on. I would be interested to see how that is done.

Josh
